Do you need to mod it for better flow or could you just add a powerhead?

I put on a small pump on the intake. Flow is slow, kind of a steady dribble through three holes in the inlet pipe and gentle flow out to the tank. Pump is rated 40g an hour. Kind of like the ones used for desk fountains. I think it will be useful to raise pods,

small powerhead works magic, I didn't do anything other than that.
