Long road ahead of you, but if you got a good deal, you'll be able to turn this around into a nice tank. What's that coating the left wall?

hey guys so i am new to a few things and could really use the help. First off i am new to keeping a saltwater tank, second i am new to this site, and third i am new to writing in any sort of forum. I think i already messed up the last one lol. I am trying to start my own on here and only found how to post in the gallery which i don't think is the same thing.

thanks man i bought it for 300 with the light, stand, tank, ro unit, all the rock,a few extras such as bulbs and test kits. It also had the stock skimmer and return pump and i am probably miss some stuff. the coating was algae. I don't really know what kind or anything. It was very thick mossy looking. Ive been doing water changes( about 35%) twice a week trying to get my nitrates down. thats really the only thing besides salinity ive been checking at my house. i have taken in samples of water to my lfs and they have checked other stuff but told me to keep monitoring the nitrates first before i start introducing anything else. My nitrates started at over 160 or 180(whichever is the max on the aquarium pharmaceuticals test) and 100 on the salifert test. its not down to right about 25 ppm. the tank looks a lot cleaner to i scraped off all that algae on the wall( not sure if it was ok to just scrape off and pick out but it was before i had anyone to really look to for advise. Nothing has died though since i moved the tank so i have to be doing something right.

What i meant to say was thanks for posting. I guess you didnt really do anything that would warrant a thanks. lol

haha well it sounds like you're on the right track at least, got the nitrates down and algae out (at this point, you can't really make it worse, so the manual removal like that should be fine)

Head over to this link: http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showforum=17

It's the beginner's forum - start a thread there and I'll see you on the other side :P

I have a couple other bulbs that the guy gave me with the tank purchase. Here is a link to the forum i started maybe you could be of some help here. 12 bucks is cheap, but i might have one that would be of use already.
