I'm new to salt water tanks... Here is my setup:

- 20g tank

- AquaClear200 external filter

- Fluval3 internal filter (mainly used as powerhead)

- 1x 15W aqua-glo fluorescent

- heater

- ~12lbs live rock

- ~1 1/2" thick "live" sand

- 1 yellow-tail damsel

- 2 hermit crabs

- 1 bumblebee snail

- 1 blood shrimp

Any comments appreciated!

I think having inverts in there is a bad idea this early in the game I dont see your shrimp or your crabs surviving the cycle. Also if you want any growth on the rock or if you plan to get corals 15W is not even close to the right amount of light. Go for at least 3-5W a gallon. Also you have no need for any filtration your rock and sand will do that for you. Get a powerhead that pumps about 150gph I don't thik a filter will provide enough current.

I hope this helps and good luck!

I used a damsel just like that to help cycle my tank. After the cycle, he got weak and obtained ich- something damsels dont usually get and he eventually stopped eating and died. your LR and LS will cycle the tank just as fast

Hello,

thanks for the comments, and I agree to both of you. I should have read much more than what I did before heading in this new hobby. I'm trying to correct this since last 2 weeks on nano-reef.com and reefcentral.com :)

Things I'm working on at the moment to get the situation rectified:

- making a DIY hood which will hold 3x15W : an actinic, a 50/50 and a daylight, since I don't have the money to buy MH, and PC are pretty hard to get costless here in Quebec (almost the same price as MH);

- getting another powerhead and removing my filter in the fluval3, so it'll be basically a powerhead too;

- waiting before adding _anything_ alive, except some snails to help with the algua growth I had last week (cyano I think, which seem to be normal as my tank "seem" to have finished cycling;

- getting some decent tests, only had ph and alkalinity atm (will get phosphate, ca and a nitrite/nitrate/ammonia kit).

Can someone tell me if it's even possible to keep some very low-light corals with ~2W/g? I heard that star polyps, some mushrooms and some zoos are low lights species and that it would be possible to have those in a setup like mine... I don't plan on getting anemones nor clams, of course :)

I'll post an updated pict soon. At the moment, the brown cyano is getting away and some green algua popped. Pretty stable now though. Some (small) coralline patches began to grow on my tank walls (bright green and purple) :)

Another thing, I put the AquaClear200 filters in, should I removed those too? What I talk about is the white sponge and the carbon "bag".

Owh, and the setup is now about 5-6 weeks old...
