The Propagator Posted December 3, 2008 That's not a montipora. That's a platygyra brain coral. Needs meaty food stuff, medium light, medium - low flow, and produces 2-3 " sweepers from time to time when hungry or peeved off. Quote Link to comment
Diatome Posted December 4, 2008 I was going to say Merulina as well but now I wonder (don't second guess prop). Quote Link to comment
Brian Crook Posted December 4, 2008 Oh really eh. Okay great thank you for clarifying that. I had always wondered why it looked different from ones on the Internet. I'll edit the title. Quote Link to comment
stoney waters Posted December 4, 2008 Prop scares me too, but I stick with merulina. Quote Link to comment
Brian Crook Posted December 4, 2008 I've seen the sweepers that he mentioned a couple times. I've had it for over a year though and never directly fed it meaty foods, and it has grown quite substantially anyways. I'll try turning off the pumps some time and laying some shrimp on it to see what happens. Quote Link to comment
yardboy Posted December 4, 2008 Merulina ampliata. Platygyra are massive and encrusting, not subarborescent as the coral in the photo is. Quote Link to comment
Diatome Posted December 4, 2008 Props great. I just keep the flow going on my Merulina and have not directly fed. I do see sweepers after lights out. I can see how this could be called different things. It reminds me of a spongodes so can see the montipora reference and the platygyra is definitely close but folds and overall shape say merulina to me. The ampliata is nice to know. The Propagator Posted December 14, 2008 Stony's right. It's definitely Merulina ampliata. chalk that one up to lack of sleep on my part I guess ? LOL! ( you guys should fear me. I'll eat your babies, and what ever else the trolls of the interwebz say I do. ) Quote Link to comment
