Diane identified it as Acetabularia, "Mermaid's cup". It grows nowhere else in my tank other than on this one snails shell.

This photo reminds me of the circus people that spin plates on sticks. I honestly thought it was Photoshoped and you were trying to make your snail look like it was performing this circus act.

Great photo!

I have had people comment that it reminds them of something out of the Jetsons.

Hi stoney waters, Like what I said before, wait for my vote on this. Real cool pic!

There is quite a history behind acetabularia. I think that snail might be doing some research on where an organism keeps its genetic information.

Thanks to everyone who voted. I'm not quite sure if acetabularia even qualifies as a macro algae. After researching I found that the entire stem and cup consists of one giant single cell. Crazy!

Thats is the coolest thing I have seen in this hobbie, I want one now.... lol

I wonder how hard it would be to get that stuff to grow on a snail shell on purpose

Definitely a cool macroalgae. The astreas get them this time of year. Mermaid's cup grows almost exclusively on shells, normally on oyster shells. At least that is where I see them most commonly when diving.
