Also check your bulbs old ones can cause this too, along with phosphates . Do lot of water changes and try not to overfeed . I have also read in several posts about people turning off their lights for 2-3 days at a time. Good luck!

Oops... my Photo Details did not come out quite clear. This is an old picture from back in January 2007. I was not running a skimmer and was using tap water (bad, bad .. I know). The tank is much healthier now, and not a spot of hair algae.

 

I just submitted this picture because it is the only macro algae I have ever had in the tank :)

yes, hair algae is micro algae. Filamentous algaes are actually single celled.

i had the same problem...just not that bad...but i was using tap
