FTS NC24 2-26-08

After almost two years I finally decided to post a fts of my first and only 24 gal reef. It has been a slow process, but a steady and rewarding experience for me up until this point, with no (major) disasters, thank goodness. Thanks for all of your help and advice which helped to get it to even this point. More corals to come

Thanks so much for the positive feedback! Deckand, yes, I m definitely not short on flow :). I have two main returns (one for the chiller) both on a closed loop powered by a Panworld 50 PX. In addition to that there are the two Koralias 1 and 2 and a nano pump pointed towards the back to keep detritus from building up back there. Even with all this flow, I have managed to develop a very gentle flow pattern. All that surface agitation that you see at the top is from aiming the corner return so that it arcs just out of the water, but not enough to cause a bunch of air bubbles. It is crazy for me to think about the zoas just starting out. None of them started from more than a three polyp frag. I love my fire fish. He is my only fish at the moment. There is also a fire shrimp perched under the cave in the middle. He is a little camera shy as well as the peppermint shrimp.

Lovely...absolutely lovely. An the purple firefish looks like he was painted to match the rocks and zoas to a tee!

Your tank is awesome!! I am inspired and stoked to set up my new 28HQI! I wanted to ask you how much live rock you have in your 24. I have yet to purchase the LR for my tank and the dimensions are the same except for height and I really like the look of yours.

I am truly flattered on all of the positive responses. All of you have set the standard pretty high with all of your tanks that I have seen. Thank you so much!

Jd, nice choice on the 28HQI. I would have got one of those if they were out at the time I purchased my 24. As far as the amount of LR in my tank, I believe that I have about 30-32 lbs in there. I started with the typical 1lb/gal rule that a lot of people follow (which is perfectly fine), but I wanted to build up my back wall a little more and what I had just wasn’t cutting it. My rock is fairly dense as well. So it didn’t go as far as I would have liked it to in the beginning. Hope this helps. Btw, thanks for using your first post to compliment my tank :) . I hope you stick around. These people know their stuff.

Once again you nano-peeps are too kind. Bluesky, i can not emphasize enough the improtance of flow. It doesn't matter if you are keepinfg softies and lps or just sps. Flow is such an integral part of the helth in our thanks. You dont want things blowing around , but you also don't want things sitting still. They can handle more than you think. Let me know if you have any mor questions
