Very nice! I had a colony of Tincs and a couple of strawberry pumillios a few years back. Really cool frogs. I actually sold some of the babies from the Tincs.

Yea thats pretty much the FTS on the bottom left. Its only cropped a bit to take out the frame of the tank. Its a 46 Bowfront. I love my frogs, everyone ALWAYS thinks that they are fake when they come into our home.

they are definitly easier to keep than most reef tanks, however dendrobatids are pretty difficult as far as frogs go to keep. They resemble reefs in the way that they are beautiful, expensive, and at times a pain to keep. I had 3 D. leucomelas at one time. very rewarding animals to have.

Those are excellent. I would say that if you try to maintain them in a rainforest like environment its as hard if not harder then a reef.

Avatars get resized automatically on the boards. In the pics section they don't resize so it screws up the page.

Just crappy coding :P

Thanks all, yep I love these guys. I think when it comes to difficulty its so minimal compared to reefs. I have had both reefs and frogs since I was 12. 26 now, however I spent alot of time reading books throughout the years going to lots of expos and researching. I think thats part of the fun and makes it worth while in the end. I also own a small salt water service and vivarium design company that lets me do this all the time. Lots of fun and the tanks always come out great. I thin kno matter what kind of tank you set up you MUST do it right the FIRST TIME. If you dont you will have all kinds if issues. EX. with the frogs you need to make sure you provide the right plans, substrate, no tap water etc. With reef same deal, right rock, good sand, and GREAT water... I know some use tap but I couldnt imagine that! Our tap has toilet peper floating in it, YUMMY, I wont drink it let alone make my animals live in it! I used to breed a species of mantella for the WWF they funded me for about a year until I sold the colony to them, I had over 300 tadpoles and frogles at one time it was INSANE!!!!! So I moved onto the dendros, smaller egg clutches!! I think these guys are just as and maybe even more rewarding as reefs, man thats a toss up. I think they are more of a shock value than reefs, people ALWAYS think they are fake and I have to make them jump for them to believe me, I do love to see people faces when they move, like complete disbelief.

Awesome! I used to raise blue and bronze auratus, but eventually got out of the hobby to make room for killifish and orchids. I don't miss raising fruit flies, but I do miss the frogs and vivariums!

Well done! It's always good to see other people are "crazy" too ;)

How do you get started in this hobby and how much could I expect to spend on this hobby?

Ryan,

ITs not that expensive at first just need a sweater box and hiding spot for froglets, I have 4 of my own still all juvis not in their big environment yet, THe cage you make for yourself, and i have just started mine, get a tank with a glass lid min for 2 frogs 20G high. you can order the plants in packages online for relatively cheap if you search around. dendroboard.com is a great forrum to do research on. Flies are the only conintuing coast at about $10 a culture my cultures usually last 2 monthes for all 4 frogs being fed 30-50 flies each a day.

i'm currently in the planning/building stages of a 10g vert vivarium. Of course, its my winter project, and am taking my time and plan on having the planted part going for a while before adding livestock. maybe 1 or 2 auratus or azurius? i know, my spelling is probably off.

any tips from the experienced, and stuff to avoid using/doing in construction?

Dont use pathos ivy EVER! LOL its a big PITA! I try to stay away from plants that grow too fast, as I HATE working on that tank. I just like to feed and atch em. black jungle has some nice plants! I LOVE air plants and if you replicate the wet dry seasons they will bloom and have some of the most beautifull blooms ever! I LOVE orchids, and they do ok, as long as they are not planted in substrate. Just tie them with fishing line to some bark wit sphagnum at the base. Make sure you get the sp. of Dicranium moss that does NOT go dormant. I have found the moss to be the hardest thing to find. Lots offer that "frog moss" junk but it sucks, goes brown. I like that spray foam if its a vert tank. use pieces of cork bark, along with the foam, you will get a VERY cool effect! I always change my set ups about every 8 months. I just like to try diffrent things, and the frogs LOVE to search out new caves and hunt in a new design. With Azures, be carefull they do NOT do good in groups of females, especially in a tank that size, they will probally fight. 2 auratus, or 2 Leucs are your best bet. If you have Melongaster fruit flies available maybe try a small group of Pumilios? They are a bit harder to keep but very cool and pretty easy to breed once their established. if you want to chat email me at flyingraphics@yahoo.com I can give you some good ideas. :)
