Louis T Posted September 4, 2006 are they hard to take care of? what sized tank do u have ? There are many threads on the forum regarding the care requirements of a mandarin fish. To sum it up in a few sentences is as follows: If the mandarin in question isn't eating frozen, then you need a large and mature tank to sustain their natural food source. However, if the mandarin is eating frozen food readily and you feed a good frozen food like mysis, then any tank size which the mandarin can swim around in comfortably should be adequate. My mandarin is eating frozen mysis since day 1. He's been in a 35 liter (10g) tank for just a little over 6 months and still maintaining his body weight. I have plans to plumb in a large display refugium just to entertain him. Quote Link to comment
Anachronos Posted September 4, 2006 Very cool. Did it eat mysis when you bought it? Quote Link to comment
Louis T Posted September 4, 2006 He sure did! I got a demo in the shop of him chasing mysis around. Since then, I saw an another 4 mandarin fish eating frozen from that same shop. These included both blue and red S. splendidus and green and red S. picturatus. Quite cool eh! Seems like we aussies got quite the monopoly on mandarins eating frozen! Quote Link to comment

Helfrichs Chick Posted September 21, 2006 Yea you can tell its sand and I have read the same thing that they cannot get ick due to slime layer. SO GREAT that the LFS you got him at gets them on prepared foods. So many people get these guys and simply not enough pods and such to eat, so so sad to see them starving bellies all sunkin in Kudos, and do you suppliment with ant vit. such as Vita-chem, would brighten up his colors even more and in all respects, make him healthier. I swear by vita chem, seems to keep the fish more full also, if thats even possible. Nice Shot! Quote Link to comment
proraptor2 Posted September 23, 2006 Thats the coolest mandarin I have ever seen... Quote Link to comment
OntarioLiftie Posted October 5, 2006 Actually thier Slime Layer is highly toxic to other fish when and if they try to eat a mandarin. Also it looks like a nice female you have, Bacause females have a more slender head than the males. Quote Link to comment
