Korbin
I just talked to a guy at my LFS about this. He said to he wouldn't use lava rock because of the potential for extra minerals and metal ions to seep out of it. He said to use "lace rock"- which is a light, smooth rock with lots of large holes, or "tufa rock" - which is a spongey looking rock with lots of small holes. Link to comment

Mr Spam
lava rock is bad for reef aquariums, they leach all sorts of nasty chemicles into the water, sulphur, mettals, phosphates, you name it. i wouldn't put any rock in a reef aquarium that is not pure CaCO3 or aragonite/calcium carbonate. Mr Spam
or you can make your own rocks. out of oyster shells or aragonite and cement. Link to comment
