A sump is an additional body of water that is connected to your main display tank as a means to have a greater total water volume. it is also a great place to have all of your equipment such as a protein-skimmer, heater, etc. This keeps your display free of all the clutter and looking much better.

A refugium is a sump but with the addition of extra live rock and macro algae. This helps denitrify the tank and helps, as stated above, export nutrients. For this to occur you have to add lights to the refugium and have seperate chambers so as to keep the algae from going through your refugium return pump. Hope this helps,

Check out the "Refugium" section. You should find what you're looking for there.
