Could someone please explain what cheato is and what it does?
Cheato is a kind of floating macroalgae. It looks like a big blob of green strings. It is usefull for keeping nutrient levels down in a reef tank. People put it in a refugium to filter their tanks with. It is great for fighting microalgae for nutrients. Hope this helps!

Chaetomorpha, or chaeto for short, is a green plant called a macroalgae. This particular macro grows in clumps of green tuft filaments. Similar to regular plants, it will photosythesize during the day or when illuminated (gives off oxygen and takes in C02) and respires (takes in O2 and gives off CO2) in the dark.

It's main use in a marine aquarium is to help with 'nutrient export', or, to remove excess nutrients in the tank. It does this by using nitrates (waste, similar to fertilizer on lawns) and phosphates to grow, thus removing them from your system. It also will help with oxygenation of the water. SH

Exactly

The cheato grows in the refugium so that other algae doesnt have a chance to grow in your main tank.
