Dude, you are a really lucky guy. I havn't seen this localy. If you get this to grow into a beutiful centerpeice you will be able to brag about how you got it as a hitch hicker. it is really worth the work just for the story. I saw a LFS with a peice of live rock with a small sponge on it for 50 dollars. this is the type of place that lets yopu bargin, but still you need to understand you have something great. People pay a good deal of money for fake plastic vertions of what you have.

 

Purhaps you could use some sort of cloth to cover it. If you can place a reflective surface over it you will block all the light. Are mirrors reef safe? You could get a Dark plastic container and put it right on top. of coarse you will want to clean it out.
