linesides Posted December 18, 2002 Share Posted December 18, 2002 Its a little tricky. First of, The maximas shell is more elongated. Tough to tell without a side by side comparison. Its easier to distinguish between the two by the scutes. The maxima will have more pronounced scutes over the entire shell while the crocea will have less defined scutes, typically near the upper edges of the shell. you cant really rely upon the color pattern, they are very similar.
