12 gal nano for beginner?

I'm considering buying a 12 gal NanoCube. I want a saltwater tank, hopefully eventually with a reef, but don't have a ton of money. The nanos look awesome. I'm wondering, basically, if it's possible or even likely, that I would be able to have a reef with some soft corals, a couple of fish, etc. in a standard 12 gal. I don't really want to retrofit.. it just doesn't seem worth the trouble. SO can I have a successful little reef with a stock 12 gal Nano as long as I have lots of live rock? There's a 12 gal Nano that has been running for 8 months complete with LR and CC substrate (that I'd probably replace with sand) for sale near me. Really, the asking price is about what I'd have to pay for just the LR. SO although I'm still learning, I think it might just be too good to pass up. He's also selling a 32 gal acrylic reef tank with everything in it. That's what I'd really like but I just don't have the money at the moment. I've read that bigger tanks are better for beginners as they're more stable but I can't really justify spending that much money right away. If I mess up, I'd be killing a LOT more stuff in the bigger tank. Anyway, I could use some advice and opinions.. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad to know it would work all right. The guy I'm thinking about purchasing from just emailed me and said he'd give me the 32 gal and the nano for $375. I'd have to travel to get it but-- that's a really good deal, right? What to do, what to do... Here's a pic of the 32 gal..does it look good to you? I'm still learning about this all. I started researching SW tanks in general but gave up after I figured out what it would cost me to get something running. AND then I found these for sale..

The 32 gal comes with a stand. Both come with live rock. The 32 gal has LR from Marshall Island and Fiji, Mushrooms, polyps, 2 Gobies, Pistol Shrimp, Black Crab (?), Clown fish (I believe it's a false percula based on pics), Scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp, Brittle star, turbo snail, and hermits. He also has CC substrate in there right now. The tanks been established for about a year. WOuld you reccomend switching to sand after this time? It seems most people reccommed sand but I also don't want to disrupt the system he has going now. He says it is pretty self sufficient (just feeding, top off and biweekly water changes). Think I should go for it??

yah, sounds very good.

if everything is going good i wounld NOT recommend changing to sand, as you may destroy a massive part of the biological filtration which would defeat the benefits of buying a nice established tank.

Well talk about disapointment. We arranged for a time to come to pick it up, what I needed to bring, etc. and all was dandy when he emailed me today and said he just sold the tank! It really sucks cause he told me I could have it.

Any way, a coworker of mine told me about a fish store around here that sells second hand tank set ups. MAYBE I'll have better luck there.
