Six
safe yes, sad yes. Many countries collect live animals and kill them for their shells and skeletons. It's not such a hot business now that they can collect live colonies and sell them for 5 times more... but those animals were actually killed for their shells/skeletons. I would never buy anything of that nature, it's only giving the business a sale on that product which to them means they should order more, which means they will keep collecting and killing to supply people with that type of thing. Honestly, LFS end up killing coral once in a while, ask them for a skeleton if you really want it. Don't pay for one, it's only telling businesses there is a demand and they need to supply it. Hope that puts it in perspective for ya. It's a cruel world out there. Knowing this now, I'd recommend returning what you bought. Link to comment

Caesar777
Good points, six. Many people don't realize that these aren't just shells found on the beach--they capture, kill, and gut the shells just to make a few cents or dollars. Link to comment
Caesar777
A couple of local fish stores just take the dead skeletons of live corals that didn't make it and put them in the live rock thing, selling them by the pound. Link to comment

lgreen
i wouldn't recommend using the skeletons anyway. most of those are really sharp (especially the brains and plate coral skeletons) and have great potential to injure fish or other inverts. plus they tend to just be a display case for algae.
