shed is cool (the narwals are sweet), montery is world reknown (I believe they are the only facility which has kept a great white shark (juvenile) for an extended period of time), scripps is cool, long beach is nice, but i am biased by new orleans' audubon aquarium of the americas because i volunteer there and really respect the mission. internationally london has an interesting aquarium with a thames river exhibit in southwark.

They say the tanks acrylic viewing panel holds back 7500 tons of water based on 8lbs/gallon that would be 1,875,000 gallons!!!

Oh yeah! I wanted to go, but round trip for 1 person is like 3,500.00, so there's no way to take the whole family (2+baby). I can't justify a 10,000.00 vacation to see an aquarium. I can buy one hell of a setup for that! :)

Wow, I figured a lot of those aquariums would be bigger. The new Georgia Aquarium is suppose to be 5 million gallons last time I heard.

From the main page of the website:

It’s almost time – the new Georgia Aquarium is scheduled to open November 23, 2005! In May 2003 we broke ground to start one of Atlanta’s most ambitious projects. Thanks to a generous gift from Bernie Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, the Georgia Aquarium will be one of the largest and most exciting aquariums in the world, featuring more than 100,000 animals from 500 different species in over 5 million gallons of water.

The Georgia Aquarium is located in downtown Atlanta, next to the new World of Coca-Cola, and across the street from CNN Center, the Georgia World Congress Center, Centennial Olympic Park and Imagine It! Atlanta’s Children’s Museum.

As the Aquarium evolves, so will our website, with a full launch scheduled for mid-2005. Check back regularly for new features and information.

I can't wait, and plan on attending opening day. There will be two whale sharks, which I heard they will try and breed. I also heard there will be a section for a reef setup as well. I know the Tennesee aquariums saltwater tank is over 600,000 gallons, and it is pretty impressive. Thank you Bernie Marcus! I will be sure to pick Home Depot over those "other guys."

Not the biggest, but the National Aquarium in Baltimore gets some props for having two 250K-ish gallon aquariums on top of each other that you walk down the inside of. They also have the most hugely impressive amazonian freshwater tank in the Borders nearby.

Oregon Coast aquarium has Keiko's 1.32 million gallon passages of the deep exhibit that I enjoyed the last time I was out there.

Any aquarium that people really care about can look good. The Oregon Zoo has a "Salmon Stream"/Eagle exhibit that's cool.

I forgot to mention Sea World. Although not technically an aquarium, they have a wide variety of species. There is at least one reef setup, although it is only a few hundred gallons (at the end of the Atlantis ride). THey also have an open top lagoon type invironment with sea stars nd other fish that is pretty close to hands on. The stingray petting area (including some sharks), was always a favorite (I spend at least an hour there even now when I go). They also have a stingray/shark petting area at the Tenn. Aquarium.

Another plus of Sea World is the Orlando area itself. Plenty of other theme parks, quality shopping, and only 35 minutes from the actual OCEAN! (oh wait, you said not to mention the ocean, oh well). Just hop onto I-4 for daytona or 528 for Cocoa Beach (and NASA). Also, if you fly in, they even have a nice tank set up in the Orlando Airport main food court.

Also supporting the Florida theme, I have to point out the Keys. I know this falls under the "ocean category" but the family can get some amazing snorkeling in on some really decent shallow reefs. At least one company offers a SNUBA experience (Scuba without the tank). This is probably the biggest, surround yourself experience you could get. You might want to save this until the kids are old enough to dive down 10-15 feet or so to get teh full experience.

Hey, Seattle! (I'm in Seattle, too.) I used to live in San Diego...Loved it. May have to move back there someday. Sea World leaves a lot to be desired, though....Is it really worth it to see some sterile blue tanks with uncomfortably cramped sea mammals? :( Their fish/reef setups weren't even that great anyway, last time I went (which, granted, was a LONG time ago).

But of course. It's THE film to see--I've seen it at least 100 times, whole or in part.

Snohomish is a nice area. And I just went to the aquarium last week--what a let-down. Never realized how mediocre it was!
