blindreef
Where to begin. I was doing laundry the other day, and my girlfriends sister came over unexpectidly with her son. I had to go change the load, and i told her sister that there are dangerous chemicals around my tank and its not safe for a 2 year old. I went down and changed the laundry and when I came back the little whipersnapper had poured an entire bottle of rid-ich into my tank. It was sad to see all the bugs that kept my tank running smoothly swimming around in dark greenish blue water gasping for their last breath(or drink?). I immediately started with the water changes, but i did'nt have much water. I got about 30% changed, and things started to look dead. By the next day everything was dead. Corals, fish, crabs, shrimp, snails, The whole setup. I cried. No tears but i cried inside. That was alot of money and 2 years worth of work!! agh. Long story i know, but my question is will the live rock be salvageable? Its the next most expensive investment, and i don't want to repurchase it. All the pods are floating in the water, even bristle worms were found dead in the bottom. Anyone have any thoughts, or words of encouragement to help me through this trying time. Link to comment
Casabubu
WOW!! That sucks! sorry to hear about that. I dont think much of the live rock is still "live". Im really not sure though... sorry to hear that Link to comment
NanoBobby
Man that sux. I have no idea as to your question but here is a bump. Link to comment

jstone624
Good thing SHE kept an eye on HIM, something might have happened. :| As for the lr, I would just scrub it and rinse in a bucket with clean sw. Should be ok, might cycle again when put into a new tank - although there shouldn't be much dead stuff on it after a cleaning. Link to comment
BJK2
I'd be afraid the copper in the medication, would probably still be in the rock, so it would be questionable. Link to comment
AndrewAquariumPlanning
formalin kills the good bacteria in your rock also Link to comment
jstone624
Try searchin for "cooking lr" on RC, maybe that would help? Link to comment
lgreen
Originally posted by BJK2 I'd be afraid the copper in the medication, would probably still be in the rock, so it would be questionable. Rid-ich doesn't contain copper Rid Ich+ contains formaldehyde and zinc-free chloride salt of malachite green. unfortionatly, I think you are screwed and should start over to be safe. The bottle claims that rid-ich has no effect on the biological filtration, but that is at the recommended dose. It is hard to say what would happen with a major overdose. you may want to decide how much you like that person, because technically they are 100% liable and you could sue them for your damages. may not be worth the trouble you will get in w/ the girlfriend though since it is her sister. i don't think cooking your rock or anything will help. you would be better of with a fresh start of rock and bacteria. good luck, sorry to hear that. g0tfish
girlfriend... or fishtank... i have recently made that tough decision. How did it work out for me? Lets just say i wont be getting any in a while. Link to comment
jmorris
I would have f---ing blown up!!! I can't believe how irresponsible parants can be with their children. Hell, I cant believe how irresponsable most adults are by themselves. I think you should get the girl to pay you back for at least part of it, even if it means loosing the gfto a big fight... It is her fault after all. Anyway, that is just plain sh!ty! Sorry man, Jared Link to comment
dhoffroad
damn that does suck...yea I almost lost it when I caught one of my daughters friends "tapping" on my 55gal plexi with a toy shovel, luckly it was plastic and did'nt scratch it all up, since then (two years ago) the kids are told first look but don't touch...but that would'nt have helped you out with a 2 year old.... anyway if you decide to start all over with fresh LR maby you can sell your rock as base rock or something to help with the costs a little... offsprg01
welp i'll put it this way, my tank has outlasted two girlfriends. so i'd have to be asking for some compensation from your gf's sister. even is she can't pay for all the damages maybe just get some new lr out of the deal to restart your tank. and if you girl blows up at you (though i dout she has any right too as long as you are courtious to her sister) then tell her she can cover the damages and send her a bill. ezramore
you might be able to reseed the tank with a few pieces and salvage the rest. you will probably have to redo the cycle process from scratch but with time you should be fine. as for the makeing the sister compensate for your loss that in your court. proraptor
Yea I would totally tell your g/f's sister that she better give you some cash for her crappy parenting...I know if my girlfriend messed up my tank she would throw down as much cash as she could... Link to comment
waterdog1
what do two year olds go for on the open market these days? Link to comment
GobyKing
That sucks!! I would soak the rock for a few days, then scrub the rock really good and soak again. I would still buy some new rock to help reseed the new tank as well as the old rock. I know it has caused a huge loss in time and effort, but be thankfull she didn't decide to drink it herself, that could of been much worse!! Good Luck with the rebuild. Jon Link to comment
rockindacheeks
omg that is the crappiest thing ive ever heard. im crying inside too. i may not know you but if you tresure your tank like i do mine i cant imagine the pain you are going through. good luck on the re-build Link to comment
