I will be setting up a 20 long very shortly to replace my nano cube. I was wondering what the benefits of have a refugium are. Does it even serve as filtration. What does it do. I was thinking the aquafuge. Or the aquafuge ps. What kind would you reccomend. I want a hang on back. Thanks for the feed back i need as much as i can get.

Refugiums create a "refuge" for pods and things that have less of a chance of survival in the main tank. If you grow algae in the refugium, it can serve as as a filter of sorts because certain macro algaes (the best is chaeto (chaetomorpha)) will remove nutrients from the tank, making your water cleaner.

I have a refugium and the chaeto in it grows like crazy. I am constantly tearing out chunks of the stuff from my AC500. I also have never had any algae problems in my tank. Now, since I've always had the refugium I can't tell you whether or not its whats controlling my algae in my main tank, but since the chaeto is growing so quickly it has got to be exporting something from the tank and I have always considered it to be very beneficial. Not to mention it is a haven for pods that occasionally slip down into the tank and I see my clowns grab them up every once in a while. Free food.
