lavalars Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 When I bought Live Rock for my Nano, I thought it would be a great idea to have big chunks. That seems like a mistake now as aquascaping is very hard and I have a hard time placing my corals. Can I take my rock out, break it with a hammer, and put it back in without causing a cycle? If I do this, should I make sure and have some salt water to wash the rock in to remove small chucks and dust? Suggestions?
Caesar777 Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Should be able to, though rinsing it in tank water (not fresh water!) may help just in case. The dust will dissolve and/or settle, not a big problem, but you may as well rinse it away.
lavalars Posted July 27, 2005 Author Posted July 27, 2005 Is there any way to minimize the stress on my poor inhabitants? Since I only have 2 chunks of rock i will basically be removing all my LR and completely changing everything.
Nemo_0916 Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I would think that the salt water rinse after the breaking would be sufficient so long as the rock is not out of the tank too long and you try not to add anything new into the tank immediately after taking such action ...
minimalist Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Remove your livestock into their own container. Take out the live rock and break it using a chizzle and hammer. Wash the newly broken up LR in salt water. Put it back in the tank however you decide to arrange it. Wait 5 minutes to let the dust and sand settle. Add livestock back in.
Caesar777 Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Sounds good to me. Make sure to keep a tight lid on the container with the fish--they WILL jump.
lavalars Posted July 28, 2005 Author Posted July 28, 2005 Thanks all - I'll post results and new pics.
