I was interested in purchasing an RO/DI Unit. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions as of what to buy in the 100 dollar price range?

Zack....What kind did you get off of Ebay?

Bob....Filter Direct? Is that the company that makes the filters or do you say that meaning you got it directly off of Ebay?

I was also looking at a few systems on Ebay, I have noticed ones with tanks and ones without, can anyone enlighten me on why I would/would not need this tank, and what it's functions are?

The ones on eBay uses the same filters. Get the cheapest one you can find. I got mine from Aqua-Safe for $89. Get the one with the 3-gallon tank, you don't have to wait forever to fill up you jugs. Plus you can drink it.

Bought mine from Aqua-Safe, very happy with it.

I didn't buy a tank with mine. Is it easier to use with one? My only issue is leaving it on long enough to fill up my containers. If you have a tank can you leave it on while you're away?

I have that unit and think it's great. It was my first time dealing with Ro/Di and it took a little while to learn the funtionality. One of the tubes was actually reversed on the unit so I was actually using the waste water in my tanks WHOOPS! But once it was all squared away it's golden. I recently got a TDS meter which measures the particles in water, my tap reads 155 and the water out of the Ro/Di gets it down to 8! I have the unit without the 4gallon storage unit since I used the faucet adapter to run it.

So I do recommend the unit. I think the owner is foreign so his english in the instructions and on emails isn't that great, but it doesn't really matter.

Thanks, i'll definatley have to pick one up, i'm glad u give it a good review, i think i'll pick up a tds meter from him also.

Not to sound too picky, but if incoming water is 155 an RO/DI should get that down to 0 I think. My old RO unit brought 140 ppm down to 1-2 and my filter direct 100 gpd off ebay gets it to 0.

Agreed. My readings are ~2ppm out of the RO and always 0 out of the DI. Then again my unit was much more than an aquasafe and has a higher quality membrane.

OK..$15 bucks...better in YOUR pocket....that buys buys two jars of ChemiPure which last for 6 months. Whichever way you go...I'm sure they are both fine. SH

True, plus i saved more, because premium's shipping wasn't in the price. thanks again for the tip on that ro/di unit SH. I think i'll capitolize on my mom's obsession with bottled water to make some extra $$ Muahahahaha!

So basically I gather that the tank just holds the water that has already been processed so you don't have to sit and wait for your container to fill up. So it is not a nesscesity to have one to achieve the highest water quality possible. Is this correct?

The holding tank is used to keep the water DI (deionized) when RO/DI water is exposed to the air, it re-ionizes (all harmful materials are already out, the re-ionization just implicates that the materials in the air are added back into the water), you only need the tank if you are a pure water maniac, or have an application that requires 100% pure water, like a jet turban (Pure RO/DI H2O is injected into the the turban via the fuel port injectors to keep O2 levels up, and other gass levels, i believe nitrogen, down). This was explained to me by my dad, an electrical engineer who builds jet turbans last night as we were looking at what the best RO/DI deal was.

So to answer your question, no, you don't need the holding tank to achieve high water quality. Even if you did use the tank, once you add that H2O to your tank, it will re-ionize anyway.

Thanks very much for that interesting information regarding this subject. It will save me a few extra bucks on my purchase. Plus now I can tell my dad this information...this will make him like me more!

Thanks for everything guys!

fluidimagery,

I also have one of those units. I bought it a couple of months ago and just got around to using it. I connect mine via a laundry sink adapter. I have not been able to get my TDS below 8ppm. I wonder if one of my lines is also crossed. My tap water is below 50ppm and I would expect this thing to do better than 10ppm.

If I were you, I would get one with a tank! That way you can use it for drinking, cooking, etc... I have a approx. 4g tank with my unit (from filter-direct on e-bay) and it's awesome!! Without a tank, I've heard it can take alongside of 45 mins to fill a 5g bucket!

I don't think the holding tank has anything to do with keeping the water deionized. If it's hooked up correctly, it is in between your RO membrane and your DI canister. If you have the drinking water faucet (or if you're running it to a freezer ice make for example) you'll tee off between your membrane and the DI and you can use that water for a variety of things, and it's darn pure. When you want to use RO/DI for your tank, you'll open the valve that's AFTER the DI and water from your holding tank which has already been through your RO membrane will then go through your DI canister thereby becoming RO/DI water and about as pure as you're going to get from that system. I think it's bad to drink the RO/DI water, and it's supposed to be highly corrosive to metals too.
