Are nanos short-lived?

I setup a 7 minibow for my friend for his first aquarium ever and its 3 years old,however its fallin to hair algea aswell....He did a good job though up till now! The sand bed has seemed to turned green and im sure is on its way out!

I downgraded from a 20 gal reef to a 5 gal acrylic reef mainly due to the cost of upkeep and didn't have the money for the lights that I really wanted. I can buy nice little pc light fixtures for the 5 gal for a fraction of the price of the nicer 20 gal pc lights. Plus i was having problems with bubble algae and aptasia anemones. But I will have abigger reef again someday.
