Aquaclear 70 (300) filter inserts

I am going to use the aquaclear 70 on my 18gal via aqua with a remora skimmer. They fit perfectly on the back of the tank. The filter comes with foam insert, carbon bag and bioMax inserts. I am not going to convert the filter to a fuge. Do I use the foam, carbon and biomax inserts or just the carbon? My 18 gal is a reef with some SPS corals. Thanks

Hey Steve, I set up my aquaclear using live rock and live sand. I installed a thin plastic divider just to the right of the pick up tube. This way the water flows up and over the divider and onto the live stuff. I wouldn't use the foam or the the biomax things on a reef tank. Try doing a search on the above modification, there ia a lot of info to be found. The only other thing I plan to do with ours ia add a light a little macro algae. Hope this helps.

Ya know, I totally missed the sentence " I'm not going to convert the filter to a fuge." It's too early, I'm going back to bed.

I would just use the carbon. You could probebly use the sponge also but you would have to clean it every few days or so to prevent the detritus from causing nitrates.

Really though, i would just turn it into a fuge. They really make a huge difference and the AquaClear fuges are very easy to make. A fuge would accomplish much more than just carbon.

I use an AquaClear 200 on my 20 gallon. I don't skim, so I do use the sponge, and rinse it out frequently. I think even with a skimmer it might be a good thing for catching large particles. I use carbon whenever I add a new coral, just to reduce stress if there are any chemicals being released by it or other corals in the tank. I think the bioMax media is unnecessary if you have a tank full of liverock.

I wanted to use the AC300 basically for water movement and to run carbon. I did end up using the sponge and carbon. I think that between the remora skimmer and lots of live rock, the tank would be OK. I might add the fuge later on. I tried to add a maxi-jet for more water movment which raised my water temp another degree or so. I went from a penquin 170 to the AC300 just for the additional water movement. The AC300 sure makes a big difference.
