DaTrizzle Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I dont think putting a mandarin in a 5.5g is ok at all. I was just stating that mandarins arent as hard as their reputation says they are. And yes of course there are small anemones but I believe he was talking about the general anemone being one of larger size.
RandyO Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 buy a mandarin never fails, do the fish a favor and ignore that advice. What I do see is that you are most likely overfeeding your tank. When you took a few days off, the nutrient level dropped in your tank and it became a happy place. The pod problem is self regulating and will not take long to stabilize. Mandarins belong in large well established tanks, not a nano unless you are willing to purchase and continue to purchase pods. Dropping a mandarin in a 5 gallon nano is like dropping a bald eagle into an 100 foot aviary and expecting it to survive on mice it finds inside. Just is not going to happen....
MandarinGal Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 For a proper discussion about Mandarins in Nanos http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread...&threadid=54632 Its not the worst advice. Maybe for people not willing to put the effort in.
reefsrule Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 yeah, just don't reccomend to a begginer an animal that takes a lot effort to keep alive w/o mentioning any care tips
sihaya Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I'm not saying the two fish won't need to be moved to a bigger tank within a year. Certainly I'm not going to keep them in there forever. And I'm not trying to convince anyone to get a mandarin... nor that it's a good thing to keep one in a 5.5g tank. My only point is that you can only speak in generalities. To say something is "the worst advice ever" is just harsh. It wasn't the worst advice ever... mandarins do eat copepods. But I think some of you all just need to relax a little. These things are so variable. Every tank is different and every fish is different. Right now my tank is doing just great the way it is... I'll just have to see what happens. It kinda annoys me how some people (especially reef aquarium keepers it seems) the more knowledge about something they accummuplate, the more arrogent, *****y and generally intolerant they get to be with everyone else. It's to the point that I don't expect to go into a store that sells coral without meeting some irritable "reef mole" that laments even having to answer even the most simple question.

Maybe for people not willing to put the effort in. It is the worst advice if you purchase a mandarin and it starves to death. If it won't take prepared foods, then it won't take prepared foods. You can't reason with a mandarin. What makes that discussion any more "proper" than this one? Because that one agrees with you?
MandarinGal Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 No actually we've been through it a million times already ok you have your opinion and it has been disproven by this discussion and the other one. So I just go and quote sihaya. Please read approx three posts up . I'm sure now that if crystina were to contemplate getting a Mandarin she would know now how to look after it. Don't know about your area but most aquariums where i'm from don't sell you a Mandarin if its not eating some kind of frozen or live food anyway. So I guess we have achieved some thing here haven't we?

Don't know about your area but most aquariums where i'm from don't sell you a Mandarin if its not eating some kind of frozen or live food anyway Wow, not sure what LFS you shop at but every one I have ever been at will sell you what ever, where ever, when ever. I am glad you have the confidence in her judgement about a mandarin, will most likely save the little guys tail when she goes over to say http://wetwebmedia.com or http://reefcentral.com and does this same research. There you will find people with 100-200 gallon tanks that can keep up with a mandarin but it can get kind of sketchy at times. I did meet a gal that had a mandarin she had for 4 years in a small tank. I went and looke at it in person. Great looking Goby, but was no mandarin. I think that there is so much controversy about this particular purchase in the first place should be a BIG RED FLAG......

Yeah well out of the 5 that I deal with in my area 3 have told me that they try to get their mandarins on live or frozen foods and if they can't they usually tell you. Depends on the LFS I try to deal with the ones that don't talk crap just to get a sale
