Outer Orbit Hood

I was thinking about picking up the 24 in. model for my 29 gal. I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with them, and if 1x150w MH with 2x65w pc actinics is enough light for my tank?

I have an Orbit 36" 4x96w PC and I love it. The craftsmanship and quality of these lights are excellent. You cant go wrong with these.

I've been looking at the outer orbit 36" or the one angel has and I can't decide... I want the MH but am a little concerned over heat

dont worry frisk- you'll regret that you never went with the MH unit...besides- its fan system blows air through it amazingly well- and if anything- you can always hang it..

Haha yeah I keep thinking I'll regret not getting the metal halide so... looks like i'll be getting an outer orbit =)

The Outer Orbit fixtures look great, but with your 29 gal. (assuming it's standard dimensions) you might run into the same issued I did on my 25H. According to specs I have read on the Outer Orbit the fixture is 15" wide, which seems like it could cause a lot of light spillover especially from the actinics.

Thought of that.. the PC's are on the same ballast..

*edit to clarify: same ballast as each other, different ballast than MH*

I am in lighting agony.. and thinking of a different tank size to use this or the Coralife Aqualight Pro..

Yeah my tank is roughly 12.5 in. wide so... but I'm converting an aquaclear HOB filter into a fuge so maybe I can put the spillover to good use?

That'd probably work to contain the spillover.. might even be able to do something with the acrylic PC shields to drop the aluminum straight out of the fixture & look more stock.. OTOH, the reason you buy an all-in-one like that is so you don't have to DIY and probably because aesthetics count in your application..

gpjoe: The PC's are on the same ballast, so you couldn't do reverse-daylight.. but you'd have some killer fuge lighting..

I picked up the "Perfecto incandescent mini light" from petsmart last night, (started my diy project), to light the fuge at night. I think I'll just take that light off during the day so orbit will light the fuge also, and put the Perfecto back on at night. So I'll have 24 hr. lights for my fuge. How does that sound?

Another question: The Orbit hood comes with a 150w MH bulb. Would I be able to buy say a 250w bulb and slap it in? Or would I have to change out the ballast for the extra wattage? I'm not sure exactly how ballasts work.

This is something I was considering too (Outer Orbit), but if you have a 29 gallon like mine it is 30 inches long. I read that the leg extensions only go as far as 25 inches http://www.marineandreef.com/shoppro/metal..._OuterOrbit.htm Unfortunatly, the size up goes to 37 inches. Even if the 36 inch versions legs came back far enough to support it, the light spill-over would be even worse. The width dimensions have ended up detouring me from this product all together because I have an Aqua C Remora, and there is no way I could use this unit without hanging it which is not a option. I am probably going to stick with the regular Orbit myself, but if a pendent is an option you may want to check this out- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...G&N=2004+113176 I am referring to the Outer Orbit pendent. If I could hang a pendent I would probably go for this myself. Good luck... I know how you feel I am in a similar boat.

I was looking for a hood because I my living room has vaulted ceilings so I didn't want to have to hang a fixture. I saw someone on the board found an adjustable fixture hanger upper thingy. So I might as well try that because I really like the Outer Orbit systems.

I thought the outer orbits came with adjustable fixture hanger upper thingies as well as the leg mounts? Isn't that what current's site says?

They come with leg mounts, but from what I understand they are only adjustable up to 25in. Well at least the 24in. model is. My 29gal. is approx. 30in. so I'm planning on maybe just cutting two small strips of glass to fit in the tray that the hood used to sit on and then the Orbit fixture can sit on that. If that doesn't work I'll just hang it.

Ah bummer, well i still am gonna grab the 36". Know the best prices for one? I know DFS is pretty dang expensive soemthing like 5 bills, and MarineDepot is like 419. Quite a spread there. Know the best online place to purchase?

marindepot.com has the 24in. model for a pretty good price. Plus free delivery. 24in. model shipped for me would come out to $361 and some change. They also throw in a t-shirt.

Would this fixture work if you were working next to it? In terms of spill over and its ability to blind you nearby? I'm considering this fixture for the tank on my workstation desk but concerned about light spillovers etc.

My friend has the regular orbit 24" and there's not much spillover at all. The way they're designed seems to keep the light pretty under control. I have no experience with the Outer Orbit, but my friend's Orbit is so nice that I'm definitely getting an Outer Orbit over a Coralife. My other friend has a Coralife and I like the orbits much better, they just seem really well put together.
