Anyone run a sump?

I was thinking about making a sump into the NC stand, custom make an acrylic one to hold maybe 4-5gal. Has anyone ever tried doing a sump on a NC? Can you just drill the back? I assume it would work well, and you could run the return line up to the existing return, or make a new one for closed loop + fuge.

 

I know the rear is suposed to be the "sump" but I want to make a a bigger fuge with more light, which means less heat under that hood.
