Here is my brand new surface skimmer based off the cassette tape mod. It is made of black acrylic. You can hardly see it now! For anyone interested I can get you the pieces for about 15.00- that is what it cost me. Shipping would be minimal.

If anyone would like one just PM me!

Here is a pic of it in action!

why not just use a cassette tape ;)

i made my original one out of plexi, but opted to use the cassette tape cause it was perfect and sorta seamless

If you do a search for the casette skimmer mod it is basically the same thing but less visible.

No Im not kidding about the 15.00. That is what I paid to has the pieces custom cut.

I did use a casette tape but I didnt want to see it.

I've had to save a Peppermint shrimp from my clear cassette skimmer(thanks Doriftu, works great!)once already. I would have never seen it if it was black. Just my opinion, stay with the clear so you can see what's going on.

reef'n ale,

I had to save my bicolor blenny in the same manner, his first day in the tank, and he was already in the cassette, looking at me like how do i get out? of course now he knows beter. I thought about doing a black cassette, but like you said its better to see whats going on, that way i can see where the level is out without popping the hood.

clarkiiclown,

your skimmer looks nice, and if u wouldnt have taken other pics, i would have never seen it at all, blens in perfectly, which i'm sure what u are going for

Here is the mod I made for my 24 nano. Prototype is aluminum, the finished product will be black poly. Put it in last night and it fits like a glove. When I match the color to the back of the tank you won't be able to see it.

You do realize what happends when you put aluminum in salt water right?

CHEMICAL REACTION!!!! It will start rapidly deterioration and coroding away in less than a month poluting you tank with the equivalent of battery acid. Not kidding here either. It will also work like an elctrode in a plating tank. any electricity even in the most minute measure will conduct right through it making it even more harmful to you and your tank over time. 1st it will turn green, then white spots , then your screwed. Thats why nothing made by aquarium manufacteres or aquarium equipment manufactures that goes in your tank or moves water is made with any aluminum or steel parts. SAVE FOR stainless steel and titanium.

i agree , initially black sounds nice but i like seeing the water level in the skimmer. so i have an idea of water levels in the back area. in time, the clear plastic gets covered with coralline anyway.

either way, nice work.

Fragfarmer:

Prototype is aluminum. I made it so I could check dimensions and fit. The finished product will be black plastic. I just put the proto in for a few minutes to make sure it was going to do the job. It worked perfectly. Thanks for the input.

NanoBob, just a thought. If your going through all this trouble to make these, couldn't you come up with a way to extend the right and left sides to come up and "hang" on the back wall? That way; no screws involved, and it would hold itself in place while feeding. I may be interested if you can do that-and make it clear.

I'm sure it would be possible to extend the "arms" so it would hang on the back, but my intention for this prototype was to make it blend in as seemlessly as possible. Also clear plastic is a problem for me, the reason being that I am using a CNC mill to cut these and clear plastic turns white when subjected to cutting.:( sorry.

don't do the "suction" method, if somebody has a large turbo snail, his weight will pull the plastic piece down... :( that = bad, i'd opt for the screw option PM me when I can buy one :)
