reef hugger
here is one, but i don't like it.http://www.angelfire.com/ok/dog1/skimmer.html this one might be adaptable to a hang-on. http://www.krob.com/aquarium/skimmer.htm i am going to try to build one myself someday. and no not with a soda bottle like the other one. thou it would be very easy to do. lol Link to comment
Sahin
Unless you are good at DIY and can get all the parts cheap, I think a cheap commercial skimmer would do nicely. Though not sure about the hang on back. I have a Prizm, but it took a while to set in and is quite loud. If its for a nano reef, I think up to about 10G you dont really need one. Just my thoughts. Here are some links. http://www.aqualink.com/marine/downdraft.html http://www.homestead.com/geosreef/downdraf...aftskimmer.html http://nucalf.physics.fsu.edu/pfohl/Fish/D...iy/downdrft.txt http://nucalf.physics.fsu.edu/pfohl/Fish/D...iy/downdrft.jpg http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~cap/raid/skimmers...g_dd/index.html http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~cap/raid/skimmers/links.html Hope those links are helpful. Not sure how good they are, but they can perhaps give you a good giude. You could perhaps modify one of the designs and build a standalone unit. Good luck. Link to comment
Djm9288
do you think a Sea clone with the modifications would work? Because i can get a SeaClone for cheap. Daniel Link to comment

reef hugger
oh yeah, the seaclone with the mods should work pretty good. if you can get it for dirt cheap. what size tank is this for anyways? Link to comment
Nishant3789
No need for a skimmer in a ten gallon IMO, just make sure u do a gallon water change every week. nishant Link to comment
Djm9288
Well, im going to have a preety high bio-load. and I just want to have a back up. Daniel Link to comment
Nishant3789
what is your bioload going to be 3 fish? thats not TOO high, and even then a skimmer wont help with that, i mea itll help the bioload but it wont make your fish just as happy. IMO skimmers do more harm than good in anything under 15 gallons. nishant Link to comment
quiksilver5768
Nishant, I think he means that he wants a back up incase he cant or forgets to change his water every week. Well in my 10 gal I have 2 false percs and a coral beauty which have all been living happily for about 8 months now. I also have a 5 gal refugium but I do changes once every two weeks (depends on how everything looks). Bio-load has been fine but I kno what you mean by using it as a back up. If you can get it for dirt cheap and make a mod for it then go ahead. It wont hurt your tank any. Though I wouldnt run it full tiem though. I would run it make 2-3 times a week at the most so it doesnt totally deplet your nutriewnts and trace elements too fast. Run it for about 12 hours 2-3 times a week and it should be just fine.
