chodaboy
I have a damsel and a goby in my 7g tank with crushed coral and a rock thats been in there for about 4 weeks. Is the rock live? If i were to take out the rock and crushed coral and put a live rock and live sand like i should have done how will this affect the fish? could i keep some coral? think the rock in there right now is alright? it used to be live, until it went to ######s and i bleached it then diluted it and put it back in. how can i make this work for some hardy coral like polyps and mushrooms? tinyreef
the rock is probably 'live' (seeded with beneficial bacteria) by now. maybe not totally seasoned but doing its job if you can't detect any ammonia and nitrites. the crushed coral can be kept or removed depending on you and what animals you want to have (i.e. sand sifters or diggers/tunnelers). you may want to buy one 'choice' piece of LR from your LFS to really inject some diverse lifeforms into your system. or get some LS from someone (not the bagged kind) to introduce substrate critters. you can just spread it over the cc if you want (or change the whole substrate to sand). chodaboy
i think im gonna take out some coral and leave like a half an inch then put an inch of live sand on top (fiji white). I might get a pound or two of live fiji rock. If i order it online will it die when it's shipping to me? will the addition of these cause an ammonia spike and kill my fish? My rock in there's gonna stay it'looks good, it's about 3lbs 4, im not sure but i think i need more rock. Link to comment
tinyreef
you're welcome i guess you could order a small amount of LR online. it's not really cost effective but if you get them fresh it may make up for it. i prefer uncured but that can be hit or miss, especially if you already have some livestock in the intended tank. as you alluded to and are probably learning quick, the amount of LR you need really depends on your visual assessment of the tank and rock. volumes will vary as some rock will be light and porous like marshall rock others can be very dense and heavy like gulf/caribbean (which are typically aquacultured with nice growths btw). fiji is also nice imo. printerdown01
I would find a LFS that carries LR (I know this can be difficult in some places, here it's as easy as finding a post office). You could easily just add small peices to your existing rock (which will help seed it with other stuff, like coralline algae, worms, pods, ect). Your sand plan sounds good too... You should be just fine. Your rock is techically live right now, and will become more effective with time. What type of rock did you use, and how many lbs?? Link to comment
