aquaclear overflow?

Has anyone thought of drilling a hole in the side of an aquaclear 300 or 500 and adding a bulkhead? This seems like it would make a nice overflow and cheap. I already have the 300 set up as a fuge but i could in theory add a sump too. What do you think?

The intake really won't offer enough flow IMO to have that work as an overflow. The 2nd concern is if the power goes out, then on later, aquaclears aren't the greatest at starting on their own.
