Aqua C Remora w/ Maxijet 1200 is one of the best. especially if you have a 55g. Maybe even a Aqua C Remora Pro...those 2 at Petco won't cut it unfortunately.

but would one of those smaller ones he mentioned work well in something smaller like a nanocube, and could either of those fit back behind in the sump?

Sorry but I have known people to purchase those skimmers and the feedback was horrible. With skimmers, you get what you pay for.

yup, as with everything else in this hobby. if the retail price is cheap, so is the craftmanship.

does your tank have a sump? if so, you've got a lot more options than just hang on skimmers.

On the contrary, an air-driven skimmer can be quite effective. Eventhough the technology is old, given the right set-up, they will perform very well.

As for your 55ga, I assume you are looking for something you can just hang on the back of the tank. I would look for a powerhead driven skimmer such as the Remora or the CPR Bak-Pak.

You may be able to find a decent used skimmer floating around on the message boards for fairly cheap. So keep an eye out.

I wouldnt recommend one of those for a 55 gallon. But on the otherhand, take everyone's advice with a grain of salt. I have the Berlin Air-Lift on a 10 gallon tank and it works just fine, I empty the collection cup all the time. Its like comparing a Ford Escort to a Ferrari, both will get you from point A to point B, but one you can drool over.

The berlin would technically fit, with some modifications. You would have to cut a whole in your hood for the collection cup to be above. Check out the DIY forums, someone has made one that fits.

then you could fit pretty much any skimmer you want in there. choosing one that is not a hang on will be cheaper than one that is, because it's not required to be waterproof like a hang on would be.

If you are in the market for a good skimmer look at things like the turbofloator by aquamedic, or any other similar skimmer. They are what is called an "Impact Skimmer" and have worked on my customers tank with amazing results. I cannot remember the name of the company that makes the skimmer at the moment but do a search for the impact skimmer. As for the Aqua C I have heard nothing but good things, and I too will be trying one out on my own tank.
