Clams in pico reef?

I'm wondering how people feel about keeping a clam in a 5 gallon reef. I just picked up this tiny derasa clam because I couldn't resist, but I've never kept a clam before and I'm not sure my tank can actually support it. Who's tried this before? Any thoughts/tips?

They enjoy high light, acropora-level lighting.  I believe, even tho they’re filter feeders, majority of their energy is still derived from photosynthesis. As long as you think you can maintain the Ca/Alk/Mag stability in such small volume, I don’t see why not. Clams do suck up a lot of those big three

i was talking to my LFS about this. So long as you are stable and feed phyto ever so often. but it will eventually outgrow the shit out of your tank and you will need to take it back or find it a new tank... or see it as a perfect excuse to upgrade. It will take about a year or two to outgrow it, they grow slowly. I saw a 5 yr old Squamosa and it was the size of a USFootball. Too large for a 10 gallon even. close to outrgrowing a 20 gallon I would say.

Well it sounds like in a year or two I'm getting a bigger tank then 😅

I already broadcast feed phytofeast every couple days or so, so I think it should get enough nutrition. Not sure if my light is strong enough though

why do you say that? what light are you running?

Just a $30 led bulb off Amazon. Kingbo I think was the brand name? It grows my softies and lps just fine and I have a montipora close to the surface that's okay, but the clam is all the way at the bottom of the tank

your tank is a 5 gallon, I highly doubt that top vs bottom will be much of a different....just saying

If this is your $30 Kingbo, you'll be more than fine in a 5 gallon tank.

That was my first ever lamp on my 10 gallon many years ago. I agree, you shouldn't have a problem with that lamp. But if you want to spend some money, I would suggest the AI Prime HD. I have had mine for ages and still runs strong, the app is amazing.
