Osmium Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 I bought this from my lfs and the guy told me it was a stylophora, but it doesn't really look like that to me, it doesn't have that "hairy" appearance. The polyps don't extend past the skeleton. Is it some kind of porites maybe? Quote
Parapodia Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Perhaps he meant stylocoeniella...not quite happy enough for full PE? https://reefbuilders.com/2019/03/20/stylocoeniella-great-aquarium-coral/ https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/coral-spotlight-stylocoeniella.519821/ 1 Quote
Murphs_Reef Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Actually looks kinda like a closed up Goni Quote
Staticmoves Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Hmmmm........... stylocoeniella have you seem it extend polyps yet? This may be the winner. Quote
Osmium Posted September 10, 2024 Author Posted September 10, 2024 It's been in my tank for a month and I've never seen the polyps extend past the skeleton, nor were they extended at my lfs. The tentacles I can see are very very tiny and clear and they barely extend past the skeleton. The polyps almost looks like cyphastrea, but spaced much closer together and it's not an encrusting type I suppose it's possible I've just never seen a full extension, but at this point I don't think that's it Quote
Osmium Posted September 10, 2024 Author Posted September 10, 2024 Here's couple more pictures. It's hard to see in my tank, but the coral is almost an inch tall as well. It's not a flat encrusting type, but has built up a large skeleton Quote
Staticmoves Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Is that chalice throwing any sweepers at night? the last photo I posted shows an irritated portion of the coral. cool looking chunk of coral what ever it is. Quote

I haven't noticed, I'll keep an eye out for that. What part looks irritated to you? And yeah thanks, it's super cool! I don't think I've seen a coral quite like it before Quote

Gotcha. It's a space invader chalice if you wanted to know, and there's some Xenia growing close enough to touch it so I don't think it's being aggressive. I'll definitely keep an eye out for that in the future though Quote

Oh wow, okay I'll keep an even closer eye on it then. I had no idea! Quote

Neither did I, its still overall low aggression, but it's not harmless to other corals either. Worth mentioning to schedule any pruning you'll end up doing around a water change, they will dump some of their fluids which contain toxins. Easily remedied. still a favorite coral. Quote
