Expect to spend at least twice again that much (another $250) even if you have a small tank (5-7 gallons). Hell, I spent $250 yesterday on live rock for my 20 gal tank. A 20 gallon reef can easily wind up costing more than $1000, even if you're smart about your purchases and do some of the more expensive stuff yourself (e.g. build your own lights).
