VOTING:

It's inspiring to see the transformations that these tanks have gone through.  I hope that it motivates others to follow suit.  We have 8 finalists that are eligible for prizes; and we need the help of the Nano-Reef community to help choose the winners.  Voting starts today January 21st, and will conclude on midnight on January 29th.

Each of the following contestants has submitted:

  • Up to 3 pictures before the renovation
  • Up to 3 pictures after the renovation
  • And an optional summary not to exceed 200 words

Use the following pics and summaries (along with the members' tank journals) to decide who to vote for in each category.  You can visit the journal threads by clicking on the title/link after each member's name.  Vote for your favorite renovations to support the hard work that these eight finalists put into their tanks.

Any ties will be broken by @Christopher Marks.  I wish to thank all of our contestants; and a special thanks to Chris, without which we couldn't have these contests.

Summary

Hi everyone Driver Dan here. Let me introduce you to MARIA Mermaid. The star of the sea and love of my life. Thank you Seabass for the introduction.

This tank is not a good representation of a RENO because was emptied and restarted. It is and looks like a newly started tank. I believe it is a good representation of trying to make another reef using what you have laying around. That was not actually what I was going for but that's where I ended up so far. Total cost for the one new addition is $10.99.

Summary

My main goal with the reno was to improve lighting to the lower parts of the tank, as well as to make room for more coral diversity in the future.  Over the last couple years, my two Montipora Capricornis specimens grew a lot, and finally reached the top of the water.  The monti growth was really cool to watch, and they are beautiful corals, but they have shaded out everything below them.  Feels like a totally new tank after the reno!

Summary

I set out to upgrade the macro bowl to a larger bowl. The upgrade would have been from 3 gallons to 8. During all the time, and some very convincing points from my fiance I decided to move all things reef into one consolidated tank. So not only the bowl , but my two other nano reefs will be upgraded to a 16 gallon Landen frameless tank that I found on the side of the road absolutely free over a year ago. Unfortunately with an increase in my work schedule, the only step I managed to take forward with the contest was cleaning said tank 😅. Well if nothing else I bet it's the cheapest of the budget builds! Money spent so far? Whopping 0$

Summary

My little nano tank that I started up as of May of 2022.

It's a 9 gallon aquarium, but with rocks and water displacement I'm ballparking around 6.5 gallons. The theme of the aquarium was soft coral dominated filled with sarcophyton, lobophytum, sinularia, nepthea, along with some mushrooms and zoanthus.

To compensate for nutrients, I have some macro algae although I'm sure the corals don't mind the nutrients.

Equipment
Tank: Seapora 9 Gallon Rimless
Lighting: Maxspect Jump 165
Filtration: Tunze Comline Filter 3161
Powerhead: Nero 3
Dosing: Tropic Marin AFR with Kamoer X1 Doser

Stocking
2 x Mocha Storm Clowns
1 x Biota Royal Gramma

The tank was going to be submitted for the Reno contest but just when X'mas was around the corner the tank was hit with a nasty infestation of dino, which recently cleared up and corals are recovering now.

Summary

My tank was amazing after a rip clean in April 2022, but toward the end of the summer it got a little neglected and some algae came back.  Overall my tank looked cluttered and needed an overhaul.  I didn't want to put money into it so I decided to move things around and get rid of stuff I didn't want.

The only $ put into this was for turbo snails which cost me $30.00 (5 snails at $6.00 each)

I got rid of my pulsing xnia.

I moved my purple mushroom on a tonga branch to the top left corner. (was on the SB bottom right)

I glued my GSP on the back wall (was on the SB front left corner)

I moved my green toadstool from the top left to the right side and down a little

I moved  my sea fan to the front left side of my tank from the back right side

I moved my acan from the middle of the left side to the front on the left side

I moved my main rock around to make more of an open cave.  Before it looked a a pile of rock.
