sadie
I set up a 10 gal freshwater tank about a month ago. It has 5 neon gobies, 2 otos, 2 narite snails and 2 little red shrimp. I have 3 plants in there. I have been using the same vacuum hose to do WC on both tanks. I didn't think anything of it (I rinse it before and after each use), but my husband asked if it was a good idea. I kinda shrugged my shoulders and here I am. Is this a BAD idea? seabass
I wouldn't necessarily call it a bad idea. Although I suppose that there are some bacterial infections which can exists in either saltwater or freshwater (IDK, maybe something like Vibriosish). However, if both tanks are healthy, then there should be little risk of cross contamination. But to be extra careful, you could always keep two sets of everything. 1 Quote Link to comment

It is kind of a pain, my saltwater tank is upstairs and my freshwater tank is downstairs. I guess I could invest in another vacuum. I've had this one for so long, I don't even remember how much they are. I don't remember it being that much. Looks like another trip to the LFS. I was thinking of getting another HOB filter. The one I got is for a 10 gal, but my water is kinda cloudy. I'm wondering if it doesn't have enough flow. I'm not loving it. The good reviews are from people with 3-5 gal so I think it does that size fairly well. I think it is struggling to do my 10 gal. Quote Link to comment

I like the aquaclears in my freshwater tanks, although it is a pain that they aren't self-priming. I'm not too familiar with the neon gobies (assume you are talking about Stiphodon atropurpureus?) but they'd like strong flow. Quote Link to comment

I meant neon tetras!! the filter I got is an Aqueon. I'm just not loving it. Seems like it should be a little stronger and break the top of the water a bit more, and have a bit more flow around the tank. Here's a pic of the tank,, you can see it's a bit cloudy. I think it's a bit of an algae bloom, but I think that's from low water flow and movement. I took the picture when I was feeding the fish, so I have the pump off, but honestly I probably wouldn't have to unplug it. I will check out the aquaclears, thanks. 1 Quote Link to comment

I thought you might be meaning neon tetras 😉 I've heard of those gobies but never encountered anyone who actually keeps them, so it seemed unlikely! I'd use an AC 20 or 30 on a 10 gallon freshwater tank personally; I usually run mine with the flow dialed all the way down to the lowest setting and that seems to work well for my fish. I did like the one you mentioned. This one doesn't have the long tube that sucks in the water. The whole thing sits inside the tank and sucks it from the bottom. I thought it was a HOB when I bought it. It suction cups to the glass and doesn't hang at all. Can't wait to get a new one. I usually do get a bigger one then is called for, so I will probably go with the 20. 1 Quote Link to comment
