okay i like it, piccaso. 👌

random thoughts

- 3/4 ply is thick af. it's overkill. could have saved some money with 1/2 inch but it feels great, it's a strong boi for sure, plus i was too lazy to redo the sketch.

- i'm gluing the boards together and securing them with #8 1 1/4 screws.

- still needs sanding, primer, paint, hinges, interior shelves, holes for cords, you know, things real stands have.

going to do an inventory of the equipment in the garage. haven't looked at some of this stuff since i moved so we'll see...

What a fantastic job on the stand. I bet you could sell them. You might be the first person to enter. I haven't seen any others yet. Following and good luck.

thanks dude, i really appreciate the compliment! hopefully more people enter and i hope you enjoy my journey as much i enjoy sharing it!

--

i filled, sanded, primed and prepped for painting. i want to do this in grey, as it matches some of my already existing furniture in the office. next came the debate between spraying it or painting it by hand. i don't have a sprayer, nor do i want to buy one...

took a trip to lowes and bought some spray cans. i sprayed a coat on the back of the door and i really didn't like the color i was getting. (also, the idea of spraying multiple cans of paint in the garage? naw bruh) so back to the drawing board.

*hours later*

like 1am last night i remembered the previous owners of this house left all of their paint behind upon their move. i'm talkin like a dozen cans of random paint colors in a variety of finishes, even 5g buckets worth! when we moved in, i threw everything in a cabinet and never thought about it until now.

the reef gods answered with a grey!

this can was ####ed up; no label, about a quarter full, but it was exactly the color i wanted.  i had to break the top because the top was rusted/dried paint shut.

image.jpeg.3d2c4da7ada10372c36e65287f02937b.jpeg

i threw a solid coat on last night, gave it a sanding and another coat this morning.

here's what i got so far

image.jpeg.3b4c7ed00d8a90b4bce6e4fed8cacd68.jpeg

i'm pretty happy with it. (sorry for the shit garage lighting). definitely going to sand it down a few times and throw some more coats on, it's already smoothing out though so it's promising.

i got some soft-close concealed hinges, some little padded footies and i'll probably stick a neoprene self-leveling pad to the top.

should i seal this with a clear coat or something? this is the first time i've built and painted something like this.

any feedback is welcome!

That Stand is amazing! I had a nuvo 10 a couple years back and absolutely loved it.

Yea no kidding, I just set up a new tank and felt poor for about 2 months while trying to buy everything. If I lived in Vegas I'd probably actually be poor (I'm a degenerate)!

What pistol/goby combination were you thinking?

thanks so much. it was a fun build. i've since started doing other stuff in the house, having a lot of fun with woodworking and this was my first "real project". i'm more than happy to send you plans i made so you can cut your own if you have a nuvo 10 🙂

was used to paying $10-15 per head on some torches, they're damn near $30 per head in some LFS out here.

i ended up picking up a orange spot goby. if i pick up a shrimp, it's going to be a candy cane. yet to see one at the lfs i go to...

life happened, sorry for lack updates.

added some stuff and moved the rockscape around after getting the goby. i wanted a place for him to be able to hide underneath and do goby things.

stopped by the lfs this week to "just check it out" 🙄😉

i had been waiting for a candy cane pistol for like 2 months... they hooked it up for christmas and gave him to me for free! he's about 1/2-3/4th inch long, so just a tiny guy and i was a bit worried- goby is about 1.5 inches or so. goby took a nip at him when the pistol was introduced. i didn't have time that day to stick around and see what happened, but i was almost for sure he was going to be a goner... i found them together later that evening! picture of them soon.

added a hygger powerhead, i was trying to get away with just the 2x RFD's off the return but it was lack luster flow for my liking. i'm running it on lowest speed throughout the day, i manually turn it up for a detritus clean out. great pump, highly recommend, $60 or so on amazon. great alternative to the nero 3 or mp10 (overkill) in this size tank.

also picked up an iphone reef camera filter. still messing with it, not sure if the best combo is orange, or orange/yellow, might need to tweak the lights? running full blues this time. i feel like the straight up orange is still slightly off color, any advice?

anyway, here's a fts.

happy holidays

yo

hope everyone had a good start to the year, i can't believe it's already february? wtf been pretty busy, i missed the entry for the nano-reno comp, oh well rofl.

i have been getting the opportunity to hit the lfs roughly once a week on a day gf and i spend together. lucky for me, the lfs is literally right next to one of the spots she likes to stop at for plants. 😈 i picked up a duncan and some white zombie zoa. i usually don't buy "designer" stuff. to me, if it looks dope, i get it, and honestly, these are gorgeous. hope they don't melt!

one of the mushrooms decided to go for a tour of the tank and was blended up in the power head.

as far as everything else goes, nothing else to really report about the tank. i'm really... just enjoying it. imagine that? hahah. cut feeding to every other day since the nitrates have balanced out. pistol shrimp and goby are best buds. clown is is being a clown, hopefully he decides to host the duncan in the future.

till next month!

Beautiful! That’s interesting with your mushrooms on the sandbed like that… don’t they get buried in sand?

thank you! it's growin! just hit the four month mark, so there's a lot to go!

the mushrooms are on a rock, and the rock touching the bottom of the glass. the rock is covered with sand just underneath their foot. the pistol shrimp likes to dig underneath the rock and kick sand on top of them, i just make sure they're not fully covered, but they adjust as they need to.

kinda late on this update.

overall; tank is doing well. i think i'm completely through the algae phase and we're starting to settle in. coralline is starting to show in places other than the pumps 😂

placed the duncan, but might move back a little bit, we'll see how big it gets. it's popped about 5-7 heads since introduced. flow is a little gnarly coming around that back right corner. i have the return blowing at the powerhead so it clashes in the middle. it puts a nice safe-low-flow-zone right up front, zoa approved.

unfortunately, aptasia made it through. it was in the back, i didn't notice it in time and it latched onto the rock at the sand level but put it's foot up under the rock. worst spot. initial discovery with me messing with it to see if i could get off, it popped babies. it's not crazy, yet. picked up some f aptasia and cover a few of them between water changes. debating on just picking up a peppermint shrimp or maybe some nudi? haven't really decided the path of action. spot treatment in the meantime for the ones i can easily get to with f aptasia/superglue/epoxy.

update on shrimp and goby, they're doing great.

Quote

...he's about 1/2-3/4th inch long, so just a tiny guy and i was a bit worried- goby is about 1.5 inches or so. goby took a nip at him when introduced.

shrimp has def been hitting the gym cause he's literally as big as the goby now.

made some other additions:

- rock flower nem
- hairy mushrooms x5 (on a single rock)

- space invader pectinia - 1 inch frag

- green fungia plate - 2.5-3" diameter

adjusted light a bit: added green spectrum alongside the blues keeping blues only into the evening and lowered overall light intensity.

two weeks ago, i apprehensively picked up a peppermint shrimp to take care of the aptasia knowing that they can be a hit or miss with lps, i was particularly worried about the duncan and was prepared to evict him if it didn't go well.

good news! all the aptasia was gone within the first evening, i kept an eye on him closely... spending most of the day underneath the enclave, later doing his shrimp business after the lights were out. turned out to be a model citizen.

today, lights come on to reveal that he had been eaten by the duncan!

image.thumb.jpeg.6786af09dab9fb8696f64c22d38c362d.jpeg

i was floored- i snapped a picture but it's extremely hard to see, you can see the antenna sticking out of the top right of one of the polyps if you look closely.

rip peppermint. ☹

in other news;

picked up a few more frags because i have no self-control;

- pink hammer

- jf mango coolers (traded gf's house plants)

- rainbow hornets

- sinularia + came with some weird hitchhiker zoa that has a pinwheel on it? they're small? will update later.

- pink diamonds

- rastas

Dude I love your tank! I have a 10g JBJ that I started about 2 months ago and I am totally cracked out on it. Gonna be coming to you for some advice for sure! I am buying frags left and right, I really like zoas as well in all the different morphs. wanted to throw this idea out here. these little planter pots are great for stuff you can't glue down.

image.thumb.jpeg.94b3986bce95cfc9f9159c27ae7f53bd.jpeg

using one for a mushroom that let go with a little rubble in the bottom. works perfectly.
