Murphs_Reef
One of the £5er mystery zoa rocks I got the other night has what I first seen as thick coralline algae but just having a good look at the tank in the blues its coral, is this a chalice? If it is LOL it's right at the top so might need a relocate.... Closer Quote Link to comment
A.m.P
For my money it looks like a scroll coral, or a really ugly cyphastrea. It almost looks like it has a mat-type growth like I'd expect from GSP or other briariums however. 1 Quote Link to comment
Murphs_Reef
I'll take either.. it was on the verge of free of charge 👍🏼👍🏼 1 1 Quote Link to comment
Murphs_Reef
I'll leave it up top then I think.. if it bleached, then that's one of them things but if it's a scroll or cyphastrea it should be grand Quote Link to comment
jservedio
The polyps look way too small to me to be a scroll or cyphastrea. Honestly, it looks almost like an acro base to me based on how small the polyps are, the wafer thin new growth, the way the polyps are clumped around the edges, and the fact it hasn't ripped the zoas to shreds. 1 Quote Link to comment

What's really throwing me for a loop is this weird matting behavior, especially on the bottom left, looks exactly like what weird gulf species of matting corals tend to exhibit, branching briarium and such. You should touch it and see if it's hard or rubbery 1 Quote Link to comment
Murphs_Reef
It's hard and doesn't seem to slime up when touched. Here it is with less blue light, looking again it seems to have flattened a portion of the zoas. And there are fan worms living through it.. Quote Link to comment
A.m.P
Oh, hold up, the divots around the polyps, are they kind of pentagonal? You might have a really upset porites of some kind. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/porites-napopora-coral The growth rim on this is really similar to your animal. Quote Link to comment
Murphs_Reef
Yeah they are from what I can see but some not so defined Quote Link to comment
Murphs_Reef
Oh to finish this up. The LFS I got the rocks from tell me that the mystery coral is a Porites that was left in a dark sump for a few months. It seems to be looking better and the polyps are opening up across the coral now. 1 Quote Link to comment
