Can snail shells turn white?

Here is a theory: It was covered with coraline algae. It died and my pistol shrimp grabbed him and pulled him in his burrow (like he does with everything he can move) and then the coraline algae turned white because of no light. Could that be what happened?

It's on the rock, so I don't think it's dead. If you poke it, does it fall off?

Snail shells don't change color when they die, anyway. That's why seashells are still pretty.

I'd guess it was a hitchhiker. That, or it was covered in tasty algae, and the other snails cleaned it off. I'm not sure what species of snail looks like that and is white, though.
