Question to you who have mangroves:

  • Since salt is expelled through it's leaves can the plant have a noticeable effect on salinity in a nano tank?

-HR

not a mangrove keeper* but I'd think that the overall salinity impact would be more or less similar to your evaporation.  you may have to readjust the salinity every few wc, I might imagine, just keep an eye on it at wc.

digging the tank concept.

I have been having a lot of trouble getting this sinularia to attach to a plug. I'm down to just 2 small frags left as the others seemed to get so stressed out they turned grey and black. Or it could be some kind of disease? I really have no idea. Here is a pic of the worse of the 2 I have left.

Anyone have a clue on what I can do? Thanks.

Already went through this in another form also I actually test this plan. I tested it by doing a water change I syphoned out from 45g to the 20g and left it running it flowed good from my tank. the tank emptied into the 20g fine and stopped or broke the syphon about half way in the the 20g but i am going to half the water capacity of the 20 already in it so it would overflow ok so I just put a second pump in to run between tanks and continue using my cascade for filtering out the 45g with the second pump all I need to do is position the syphon tube or pipe to where it breaks syphon on about a third of the capacity of the 20g is this makes any sense does it I am reading it and it kind of makes sense to me if there could be a problem please I am all ears let me know I will try to fix solution to it or find some one who can help.

Helloooo!! I haven't updated here in a while!! I am trying a new method to save whats left of my green sinularia. Basically just tossing the frags into a container with rubble in it hoping they'll attach themselves. I know it's commonly used in mushroom propagation so we'll see how it works.

I've been having some algae coming in but luckily my clean up crew works as a team. 😆

I've seen roger riding snaily to reach the good stuff twice now. Smart crab.

In an effort to handle more of the algae I bought an emerald crab as well. He was very efficient at eating the brown hair algae, but quickly turned to eating my toadstool leather. I had suspicions but finally caught him in the act late last night.

I managed to remove him from the tank and he's in the refugium where he cant hurt anything else. Its funny because that toadstool is actually the most expensive coral I have bought. 😅 (I'm frugal)

Ummm what else has happened... oh yah I had my cornea surgically scraped off so I dressed as a pirate for a youtube video. Because thats just what you do in that situation.

Hey gang. I have a new video up on my YouTube. I have played around with multiple styles of video making trying to find my niche. I feel good about this one!

I have been basically just doing my water changes 1gal a week and seeing how the tank grows. I haven't tested for anything since my ammonia tests during my cycle. Not a single test. I feed my one fish very sparingly, but usually every day. I dont have an ATO yet I just do it manually each day. I kind of like that it forces me to interact with the tank on a daily basis. Otherwise I might succumb to the busyness of life and neglect the tank or not truly enjoy it. Writing this now I think I'll have to make a video on my process. 🤔

IMG_20210516_201946_256.thumb.jpg.4fd99a17fbfe2ef9485022b150a838b7.jpg

My algae issues I blame on my RO filters still needing replaced 🙃 and that I don't have chaeto in my fuge yet. Soon tho! Just been waiting on a chunk from a buddy. Hopefully with just my water change routine I will continue to see growth and success. 🤞 Have a legendary day.

Today I cleaned out the complete mess under my tank, and put in some scrap flooring I had laying around. Really looks good!

I also hooked up a new lamp and got my grow bulb going on my chaeto. It makes for a beautiful picture!

Today I took out the 10k bulb and put in another actinic.

It definitely looks less bright, but I kind of like it. Obviously makes the corals pop more.

This looks like it has split into a new head. Yay for growth. Especially LPS growth.

I'm curious to see how the corals react to the different color temperature. Same wattage. What do you guys know about this? I think a lot of people these days keep it more blue.

As long as you're consistently pulling out some chaeto every so often to remove nutrients, I don't think its super important that the scraps come out

The scraps are annoying as hell, but there isn’t much one can do about it, that’s just what chaeto does. A lot of those scraps will eventually turn white and slowly disintegrate and be eaten by pods and other detritivores.

Thanks guys. This is my first time having chaeto. Display algae is already clearing up. 👌 I have I think 5 hermits in the fuge was hoping they'd eat the scraps which I think they are, but also I find them on the main clump 😆 oh well its fine. They will be fat and happy.

My chaeto all of a sudden exploded in growth this past week. I had to rip some off. This is how much I removed.

There is now so little algae in the display I moved my big astrea snail and most of the crabs to the rear section now. Chaeto is awesome!

One of my green mushrooms split. Here is a few photos of them.

Video update on the tank is up!

Honestly I'm amazed at how well the chaeto sucks up those nutrients! I hope all you Americans had a good safe 4th!!

great progress, what light did you use to light the chaeto

Thank you! I used a 100w equivalent LED grow bulb I got from amazon. The previous episode shows me setting it up and has a link to buy it. 👍

An update on the tank.

For several months now I have been doing only a 1gal WC a month. Things are still doing well. The growth isn't very fast, but overall everything is good. My gsp of all things slowly deteriorated away. Thats the only loss I've had. I added some more zoas and a birdsnest frag. Since it's winter now and I'm inside more I think I'll switch back to weekly WC and see how the corals grow with more nutrients.

I've been sort of absent on YouTube lately, but did just post a video of making a DIY bubble trap. I'll link to it I hope it can help someone out and save a few bucks! Cheers!

Do you guys think one koralia nano is enough flow for my 10g tank? The return pipe doesn't move much water at all. Im considering adding another pump on the opposite side because my birds nest frag I added is growing very thin. I read the more flow they have the thicker they grow.

Also, lately out of just boredom I've been considering switching out my t5s for led. Curious on opinions there. Running 28 watts of t5 sitting about 4 inches up from the aquarium rim. Lately I've been good about my weekly water changes, but the coral growth isn't quite as fast as I'd like so I'm wondering if lighting is holding them back.

Have you considered supplementing your T5 bulbs with a strip of LED lights, to have the best of both worlds? T5’s have a nice even light spread, LED diodes will add some shimmer and growing power, but you can keep the softer even light from the fluorescent bulbs to balance it out.
