Those new crabs are great additions. I hope you relax and enjoy your time with family. Shutting the lights off should be ok for a couple days just like a couple cloudy days out in the real world. I see more people post that the tank looks great when they get home. The exception is in the summer if the tank gets to hot from power loss or AC stops working. Your tanks are pretty diverse and I think the livestock will do fine.

Thanks for the confidence, Deb. I cleared it out with the family - we'll only be gone for 3 days, 2 nights. I won't be seeing/dosing the tank for only one day, and the lights will be off while I'm away (I'm switching the lights off for my 60G reeftank & 70G FW eel tank as well). All fish will only skip out on meals for a day.

I think as long as it's not too heaty and there is no power disruption, all animals *should make it through. Just a bit worried about the nano - but I'll WC it the day before we leave.

Need to get the dog boarded at the pet hotel and leave plenty of food/water for my bird though. So much prep. to be done - I'll try to make a to-do list tomorrow so that I won't miss anything out. 👍

Also - quick update: I re-glued the green lepto to the back wall to give the micro-goni room to grow in peace. Removing the lepto did cause Harold the new porcelain crab to scuttle under the rocks for cover - I hope he pops back up again soon, and takes up residence in my GSP like my previous nem crab did. 🤔

Look at all that free fish food. They might just have a feast while your away. That said with no knowledge of what anemone crabs do with their eggs.

I assume they release them eventually into the water column. Pretty sure Prowler would love having some fresh crab roe soon. 😄

I forgot to update: I think Minion the scarlet legged hermit didn't make it through his first night in my nano last week. I only found his empty, upturned shell today 😓, but now that I think back, I didn't see him at all once I added him to my tank. Heartbreaking. 😭

I think I'll abstain from adding hermits for now, and content myself with the two crabs that I have just added yesterday (it's 1am atm - an anxiety attack woke me up, just waiting for the meds to kick in so that I can fall asleep again). 😕

No plans on adding more fish. But if I come across a unique shrimp like a GCBS or white spotted nem shrimp, I'll be picking either one of those up in the future. 👍

I decided to test out the Pro Mode feature of my S9's camera for a change. The results were interesting, to say the least. 😊

Apparently my two monti fraglets are having a small coral war:

Not sure which piece will win, but the chili pepper fraglet seems to be in the lead. 🤔

Spotted more zoa morphs for sale at a new online retailer which specializes in selling 'exotic' corals, but the frags are all super-expensive. 😓

I'll try to scour around the discount racks at my LFS - see if more new morphs show up (or are rather left forgotten) there. I know my secondary LFS just acquired some massive multi-mix zoa colonies of various colors. There was one (red skirt, beige center) which I was eyeing on, but I'll have to wait for them to frag it. 👍

Forgot to add - my pocci RTNed a few days ago. The frag toppled into my purple death palys last week, then toppled again into my green acans when I tried to re-glue it. The stress of falling all over caused the base to STN. I trimmed off the base and tried to save the tip, but within two days, I was left with a white stick-nub. 😓

Thankfully, poccis are quite inexpensive and common here - so I'll probably replace it with something else (like a new zoa morph or a super tiny stick).

Had to just re-glue one of the new blastos back on Coralline Ledge because one of my turban snails knocked it over and upside down. 👍

Update #1:

Both my tenuis are growing:

Managed to get a blurry topview of the O.P. tenuis - the tips are now blue, purple & a bit of yellow:

Superman monti is growing, but the polyps are a mix of red & blue - hopefully they'll all convert to blue in the months to come:

Update #2:

Looks like a small clump of GSP survived on the orange zoa frag - so I'll have to trim that bit off again:

Brown algae on the sandbed. Vanishes at night, reappears in the morning. Very strange: 🤷‍♀️

It's interesting how my phone auto-adjusts the lighting when I focus on a specific coral in the tank. I'm trying to shoot pics in manual mode, but yet some pics come out darker than the others. 🤔

Oh, well. 🤷‍♀️

The new green lepto that I stuck to the back wall started browning a bit at the top edges for some reason. I'll keep an eye on it. 🤔

This tank is looking great.

Thanks, Deb! It's far from perfect and has its ups and downs, but I'm happy to continue working on it.

I also opted to stay behind this Christmas, so I'll be watching over all the animals and babysitting the dog. 😊

I get it will be much less stressful but I am sure the family will miss you.

Yeah, my mum's already lamenting over me missing Christmas. But my grandmother's state has had a sudden spike in Covid cases over the last few days, and it keeps getting worse. 😕

Also, I kept getting anxious/stressed out over leaving, so I decided it's best to stay. It'll be a quiet Christmas on my end, but at least I won't be completely alone. Duchess & Phoenix will be with me.

Duchess = my dog.

Phoenix = my sun conure/parrot.

Your tank is as colorful as a Christmas tree would be! Sorry to hear you’ll be missing your family,  but you’re right- dogs, birds, and fish are family

too.

in my old tank I had that brown algae show up in the last two months or so, too. Looked exactly like yours and came and went with the photo period as well. I’ve noticed others on this site having the same. I’m waiting for it to show up in this new tank. Does it seem to be bothering anything?

So far no. I think it's part of the tank's maturing process - there will be various types of algae that will come and go, naturally. So far I've had green film algae pop up on the rocks, green hair algae (GHA) and brown film algae pop up on the glass, cyano pop up on the blast colony for a few days (???) and now this weird brownish film that affects a very small patch of sand on the far left corner of the tank. I'm relying mostly on my turban snails and manual removal to get rid of any pest algae - but it's nothing to be too worried about, I guess.

I use treated tap for all my tanks (which is actually DI, because we have a large distiller on our sideporch plugged into all the main pipes leading into the house), but I don't think the water source is an issue. From what I've measured, the tap water has 0ppm PO4 and 25ppm NO3, which isn't too bad.

My 60G has some fuzzy gray algae on the rocks though, but that tank is full of fish and I feed very, very heavily. The nano is stocked okay, fish-wise, but I feed it very lightly - only once a day, and just enough for the fish & non-coral inverts to eat. No excess.
