Gulf Coast burrowing mantis shrimp? Found at the coastline.

Recommended Posts

This picture is from our family newsletter, a few years ago, and I thought I'd try for an ID. It was in the sand right at the waterline, caught because it wound up in my sifter. You can see it was very small, maybe an inch and a half at most. I'm curious if anyone can point me at any resources I can use to ID this. I'm trying to find the original photo for a bit more detail. I think it was a smasher, but I don't remember clearly enough to be certain. Don't remember how well I could see the details, it was swimming really fast in the container I put it in. I let it go after this picture, and it vanished back into the loose sand just underwater.

Cute little thing, and the only wild mantis shrimp I've seen live. I saw a big dead striped mantis once, that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to grab for my specimen collection.
