will add the inkbird to upgrade list hahaha.

i kinda like the idea of a cheeky hungry shrimp, I find them really fascinating. I have a bunch of red cherry shrimp in my fw tank, so cool to watch, but these are so much bigger! Will keep that in mind for feeding.

by the way what kind of fish food do you all use?
already have frozen Spirulina brine Shrimp, was thinking of getting Mysis shrimp, and some pellets?

Was away for a few days, but tank now seems cycled, just dosed it again with ammonia and I’ll test again in 24hrs.
got some new things come in too, the cobalt heater and UV sterilizer still waiting on my led lights to be delivered.

Got the last of the goods in today!

So finally started these upgrades, new heater, and upgraded the lights under the hood, 2x Truelumen (current USA) actinic leds, really nice! I also had an old glo-light led strip On hand, it doesn’t do much but adds a nice purple look! here’s the new hood 8B7B6A3A-2985-4016-A2B1-F3A9EB37B758.thumb.jpeg.d551ff2e790ef4e3984bd1b892be9307.jpeg

got some timers on all 3 lights, with ramp up  and down, not as easy as an app to control but once it’s set it’s good to go. Here is stock light versus new...

im really stoked with the difference and control I have, especially for a setup with the lid on!

here’s a shot of the above the tank, as much as I need the hood, I would also love to be able to look at it from above more often.8A0900B5-74D7-46AC-9882-D1DDCF00A330.thumb.jpeg.96dab8f4858d1075b782f7f7f63ca6da.jpeg

Yay for new goodies! The light looks great! I wonder how much it improves the par on the stock lights.

How did your tank do with the ammonia when you retested?

Hahaha yah that will be enough goodies for a while now, next up on the wallet will be fish and then coral!
Not sure what par levels I have now, I saw a thread where somebody measure the stock light with a Seneye so I will just take those in consideration and estimate haha.

Yah this cycle Has been kinda keeping on my toes, the 24hr test didn’t work still had nitrites and the day after, finally today I was down to zero again. So I dosed 2ppm this morning and will see tomorrow, I’m About 3.5 weeks into the cycle, i use fritz zyme 9 to boost it on the first day...

cant wait to get a fish in here !

This cycle is keeping my on my toes hahaha, test was negative yesterday, but i did read 0 nitrites this morning... so 48hrs. I should have tested at the 36hr mark to see. So I dosed 2 ppm again and will see tomorrow!
Saltwater bacteria grow slower because of salinity, I get that, but do saltwater fish produce more ammonia? From what I read And see is that SW bacteria is more fragile, and prone to crashes?

After dosing 2ppm yesterday morning, I did the 24hr test... 0 ammonia but I still have 2ppm of nitrites...from the last 24hr test I did I know the nitrites will down at 0ppm in the next 24hrs. These nitro after are taking their sweet time hahaha

I guess I’m still playing that patience game then...

This little clownfish is so fun to watch, just the way they swim! so far he’s eating spirulina brine shrimp and new life spectrum pellets (I think they’re a little too big for him so I crush em up more, was also soaking them in the brine juice to get him going on them)

but anyway... it’s getting hot! The tank is going into the 82’s anybody got recommendations on a small fan? Will probably get the inkbird temp controller to control heater and fan

Buddy is still doing great, loads of eating and swimming around nicely!

Alright alright alright....

these guys are still shy, but here is the best pics I could get!
Orchid dottyback

was originally going to go for a goby, firefish or gramma, The Lfs had a wild purple firefish (it looked in a weird shape) and wild normal firefish... but the captive bred aspect of the orchid dottyback appeals to me, plus it’s a little bit different than the usual combo we see in these size tanks, made sure to check it wasn’t a purple dottyback haha... as these can be feisty.
and living in the same holding tank was a scarlet skunk cleaner fish, so that was a no brainer as I knew I already wanted a cleaner shrimp, and they we were already buddies! The shrimp is still super shy...

Also got 3 nassirius snails, there are some extra food pellets and brine shrimp around the sand so I figured it would be good addition right about now, especially with the added livestock. They buried in the sand right away although the clownfish went to bite the smallest snail’s little siphon trump so hopefully he’s ok.

Also picked up my first coral, ZOA’s

Beautiful additions!! Where did you end up shopping for those? I've always liked Orchid Dottybacks but I always thought they needed larger tanks, around the 30 gallon mark. How is the Dottyback getting along with the clown?

Link to comment

Thanks, got them at Marinescape, same as the clown. I hope it doesn’t need that many gallons, the Lfs said it was fine, and most websites say 30 but they also say 30 for clowns and firefish but everybody has them in nano’s... it’s also listed for 10 gallons on Nano-reefs guide to nano fish. I hope it’s ok, it would suck if not, but I guess if she gets too big then I will have to Re-home her, either by upgrading 🙂 or give it away to a local....

she’s acting great, swimming around, hiding in holes in the rocks, eating pellets and brine shrimp. The dotty back and clown swim pass each other and keep to themselves, so far so good!
wish the shrimp would come out more though, just hiding behind the single rock on the left.

This I think would be the perfect solution 😛

Got to buy a house first... hopefully in the next 2 years. But it does give me time to dream up my ideal setup... thinking maybe 100 gallons, the wifey has already said yes!  A few months back I was thinking it was going to be a planted discuss tank, but now I got my hands salty it’s defo going to be a reef!

I like the 40 too, good dimensions! Wish I kinda did that for this tank, but the Evo was noob proof Hahahaha

That’s true, rn I have a UNS 45a (9 gal AIO [7 gal display]) and I’m upgrading to a 12G JBJ cube in August

How do you have yours set up?

So my Inkbird has a plug for the heater and a plug for the cooling. I use a little fan that I've zip tied to my AI prime.
