But I’m completely in love with this new tank, even though I made an annoying discovery last night about my new light holder which makes my OCD twitch.

Get home and find a nice diatoms bloom going on the sand. Guess that can be viewed positively as a tank going through its normal birth pangs, right?

I have at least 10 conchs running around the sandbed............also a bunch of nassarius snails...........

There’s at least 4 big tiger sand conchs- I’ve lost count. Bunch of astrea turbos. Nassirus snails probably went bye bye with the old sand. The conchs have been wreaking havoc with the frags on the sand bed. I can’t wait for the rocks to hurry up so I can get them in there!

So, made a couple of additions today. Got a couple more fairly large tiger sand conchs and 10 assorted small hermits to help beef up the cleaning crew. The diatoms come and go, always heaviest in the afternoon with the lights. The crabs and snails will help and even the blennies have been working at it in there, loving the algae.

Picked up a pair of pearly jawfish, which were together and sheltering together like a true pair in the store and in the acclimation tank. Unfortunately they got separated when I introduced them to the big tank and I hope they find each other again. Pretty pair. I have names in mind but I’ll give them time to prove they’re going to live long enough to earn them.

Also picked up an Atlantic blue tang. Have been eyeballing this type is tang for a while, since they remain relatively small, and are a pretty blue. The boys dearly want another yellow tang eventually so after the tank settles more and we have actual money (since I pretty much take it and hand it over at the fish store 🤦🏽‍♀️), we may get one. Some day.

I had hoped the rocks would be ready today to add to the tank, and they almost fooled me, because they *seemed* cycled yesterday when I got no ammonia and some nitrates on testing. But when I hit it with the ammonia test, it failed to clear, so more

time needed. Wah wah waaaaahhh.

Also once again, ordered the wrong sized light bracket. In testing the lux for the tank I realized the shorter one gets better spread than the longer bracket. So I guess I’ll be exchanging the long one for a short one ☹️. I feel like it’s a little bit of a battle to get some of this new tank stuff squared away. But that could just reflect my current mood these days 😢

Looks great so far - love the Atlantic tang though! They're very expensive (and rare here). 🙂

He wasn’t exactly cheap here either but i couldn’t resist. So far he’s so damn shy he just peaks at me through and over the rocks. I hope he gets over that soon.

Eating last night! 😊 He’s still ridiculously shy and I can’t give him a good name until he gets over being such a chicken. For now I’m calling him Pollo.

So, by popular demand, a purchase was made today to appease the small humans.

Ive named him Ares because he’s already somewhat pugnacious but with reason- Alexander Hamilton won’t leave his tail fin alone. He’s already settled in fairly well with Oceanus. Cross two fish off the list of wants, considering a few more small ones. So will have a very busy smaller fish reef.

Oh and the jawfish kills me- he’s so funny and cute looking with those eyes!! Perseus decided to make his den beneath Mr Blenny Blenn’s barnacle and has been happily digging and flinging sand. Haven’t seen Andromeda but have seen evidence of her making burrows. Wish she’d come to the front of the tank so she could be seen.

There are many names here. Ya gotta give us the list of names and fish types, I can’t follow their antics not knowing who they are. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Lol. Names are a must when you have two small kids involved and the fish end up as pets.

Starry Blenny- Altuve

Bicolor Blenny- Mr Blenny Blenn or Mr BB

YTD- The Blue Dude

Flameback angel- Alexander Hamilton

Yellow coris wrasse- Rey

Leopard Wrasse- Bastet

Tricolor wrasse- Capn America

Female Black Snowflake- Pearl

Male black Snowflake- Hector

YWG- Mr Goby Doby

Sherman Nem- Anubis

Atlantic Blue Tang- Oceanus or The Big O

Yellow Tang- Ares

Lg Pearly jawfish- Perseus

Sm Pearly jawfish- Andromeda

If you haven’t noticed, a lot of the names arise because of whatever the kids are obsessed with at the time we get the fish.

The rocks are getting close to being ready!!! Tested today and got no ammonia but somewhere in the 95-160 range of nitrates. So I fed the tub a bunch of pellets and dosed more MB 7 and let it cook some more. Maybe wishful thinking but I'd like to think the rocks are ready by Friday so I can put the rock scape together. But if not, it won't be until next week when I can do it because of work. Got wrangled into a super long weekend ☹️

So got some new stuff in from BRS today. Got the new light bracket in that gets the lights at equal lengths over the tanks, so my feng shui is at peace over that for now. Got my new clear view lid ordered with all the extra goodies needed, which is going to be one of those waiting for Christmas issues (I hate waiting ☹️).

Also got a new filter media cup that fits in the holes for the filter socks.

So since I was pulling out one sock to place this cup, I ordered new filter socks made of felt thinking that would make the need for filter floss go away.

I ordered new sponge pads that can be reused to put in the place of where I've been using filter floss.

Hopefully these actions work to keep the water cleaner and prevent a lot of the micro bubbling I was getting. It's gotten somewhat better with a change in the position of the skimmer outflow, and also because I took the weir in the return pump chamber and flipped it upside down. that way the weir is always up, always open but available to use as a wall for the floss/sponges so they don't get sucked through the water gate and into the return chamber.

The new guy Ares settled in well over night. Today while watching them all, he and Oceanus were actually playing and hanging out with each other. Alexander Hamilton seems to have stopped tail nipping when he goes by. Only fishy issue I had today was that I found the little pearly jawfish in one of the filter socks when I got in there to install the new stuff. Sure enough she was in a sock big as day. She's probably THE only fish that could have fit through all the return overflow grid. I got her back into the main tank but she was acting confused or distressed, wanting to swim at the top and chasing her reflection. I tried to herd her to where Perseus has his den, but she popped back up and was swimming at the top of the water again. Eventually one of the clowns scared her back down to the rocks. So I hope she's okay in the morning and starts making her own den with the intention of staying there. Dont want to lose her--her and Perseus are such a cute pair!

If all that you have is nitrate, then your rock is cycled.  what else are you "cooking the rock" for, removing phosphate?  if so, you might wanna test that too.  oh, and do some water change while you're at it.  you don't wanna introduce dirty rocks (chock-full of N and P) into the new tank.

I say cooking because it’s so freaking hot here and they’re in the garage. No heater needed. I’m surprised they could cycle at all with the heat. Struggling to keep my Phyto and pods stations from getting too hot too.

I will test everything tonight when I get home so that I have more free time tomorrow to do whatever (water changes on the Evo and AquaTop are due on Friday and I only have Friday to work with since I’ve got to work three days in a row starting Saturday 😭😭😭— I love getting paid but I hate pulling so many 12s in a row). If the rocks are looking good tonight I may be able to get them in tomorrow but I suspect it’ll be a next week thing regardless. And I’ll probably rinse them before I put them in the tank.

So tested the rocks tonight after doing water chemistry on all tanks. The Ca was low on the big tank and the KH slightly lower than my taste, so adjusted the doser up a bit. Everything else was amazingly good. Not a water change in sight! The rocks however, are disappointing me. About the only good news is, that’s less for me to do tomorrow, because they were decidedly not ready tonight.

Nitrates hanging out at 100-120ish. Not quite 95 and not quite 160.

Phosphates high at 0.43ppm

And the result of feeding the rocks pellets is ammonia of 1.5ish. The circulating pump isn’t moving water through all the rocks that well, but I swished it around in there tonight and dosed MOAR MB7. We will get there eventually. Kind of a relief to not have to smash rock scaping into tomorrow.

Mr Blenny Blenn is really becoming a photo hog in my big tank. He obviously likes living on the high side of life rather than in the sump.

Little miss Bastet isn’t quite so little anymore when you compare her to the other fish like Alexander Hamilton. She also eats Mysis like a big girl now, aggressively going after food at dinner. I’m so proud of how well she’s turning out!

I have so many pictures I got lazy about editing. And work was so busy yesterday I couldn’t really get through many.

Bastet has done so well- for being my little unicorn fish she’s grown and held her own in there. I can’t call the tank success skill or even knowledge based because I don’t know that I have much of either still, but the tanks have surprised me with living. Even with the incident yesterday- the little tank already looks back to 90%
