That one

That nearly died because my 60G crashed yesterday. Lost half of my corals in that system due to bleach/chemical fumes. Long story.

I'm sure that's what happened to my RSM. Caught the office cleaner spraying anti viral and anti bac spray all through the office and me with an uncovered tank 😞

This tank is getting full. Looks great.

Thanks, Debbeach - sorry for not responding properly earlier. Was battling a really bad migraine. Been going on for 2 weeks now. 😞

I plan on adding more different types of macro to this system, as well as more zoas and mushrooms. I'm literally running out of space, and the current corals still need room to grow. The regrowth of all the previously dying corals still surprises me, however. I only do a full 100% WC once a week. And feed the stars a few pellets every other day, and feed the corals a mix of wet/liquid food once a week. Otherwise, the tank itself is relatively easy to maintain - the system sort of takes care of its own needs.

I do have to top up the water every other day though - I currently don't have an ATO on this thing, but I'm thinking of getting one - just in case I need to be away from home for a few days.

Re. the migraine: are you drinking a lot of water? If so, are you getting enough salt and electrolytes? Dehydration will make migraines much worse (I get 'em too), and you can get dehydrated if you flush all your salts out and don't replace it. Your body needs salt to properly absorb the water. If you find that you're thirsty a lot, and drinking water doesn't help, it's likely a salt problem.

Well, it has been very hot lately, and I'm drinking water quite frequently. I have a history of kidney stones - after being operated once for them, I decided not to risk it and try to keep hydrated as much as possible.

My father suspects my glasses need to be changed, and that my eyes are straining when I read, hence the increased frequency of the migraines of late. I'll be seeing the optometrist this Friday. Hopefully after changing the lenses, this will settle down.

Took some snapshots of the Pico's corals today morning:

^These were all taken when the lights had been just turned on, so most of the corals don't have full PE yet.

I'm currently hoping these two pieces will recover and return to their original colors:

I visited my primary and secondary LFS today. Got a chance to speak to the manager from my primary LFS as well. They had some leftover corals on sale:

I reserved 3 zoas (pricey, but worth it) as circled in red, and I'm thinking of booking a 4th frag (as marked by the red arrow):

Blue and purple corals are very hard to come by here at times, and they're both my favorite colors, so I figured wth, might as well snatch up whatever I can.

I did pick up 3 frags today from them though - a meteor shower cyphastrea (haggled for this one - frag is pale and color has run off, but I *think it can return in time), an old blasto merletti frag I booked before the lockdown & a pulsing xenia (hopefully this one will turn out okay - my previous attempts always ended in the coral detaching):

The snails should make quick work of the GHA on the xenia frag. 👍

Breaking this up into two/three updates - lots of pics ahead! 🤗

1. Zoas

Finally, my purple zoas are all mostly open today. They still have brown skirts, but the brown seems to be developing a reddish tinge. 🤔

IMG_20200529_172400_009.thumb.jpg.86518e651ea576d67ec4ace879125856.jpg

I saw a slightly different variant if these at my LFS yesterday. Those were a brighter shade of green, but had green skirts though:

IMG_20200529_172717_695.thumb.jpg.43dcc6cb7f468b0400ca6f28e6e753cb.jpg

Orange bam bams are now up to 5 polyps. 😊

IMG_20200529_172815_024.thumb.jpg.4e8df73f57c539506967a7c369018e77.jpg

I have a small issue with transparent/whitish acoel flatworms popping up over my red PEs. They're not a nuisance yet, but they do look unsightly: ☹

2. Macroalgae:

I had some GBA pop up next to the RBA recently. I removed the whole cluster of macro, then removed all the green bubbles by hand and disposed them. Once I did get rid of them, I noticed I had a few tiny red bubbles grow in its place. Don't really mind them, because they look quite striking and so far are restricted to only one small piece of LR (the one they came with):

3. New corals:

Both my new cyphastrea and merlettis are still pale. They were purchased that way. I got into contact with my LFS, and they assured me that the frags will color up once they are stable enough:

I think my new xenia hates me though. Still looks floppy this morning. 😔 :

You can see the 'bubbles' along his arm, hence the common name of 'bubbletip brittlestarfish'. 🙂

I personally think these guys are amazing - I have three of them (1 in the pico & 2 in the large reeftank) and they're very active at night. 😄

I also did a 100% WC today using new water from our freshly serviced distiller. Haven't tested the nitrate level of the new DI water, but it should be much lower now.

Corals and other livestock responded very well after the WC. I've been facing some slight issues with my rainbow acans though - it was knocked over, upside down in the sandbed a couple of days ago and is still a bit moody.

My xenia appears a bit better today. No pulsing, but it's not deflated either. Can't wait to bring home my new zoas next week. 🤗

Also, would anyone be interested in seeing some before & after pics of some of the frags I took in? Just to show the progress of the coral over ~1 month, and compare the changes in growth and color. 🤔

Of course we would. How did you make out at the doctors?

I'll try to upload some pics later - nursing another headache. This is the third week. 😞

I checked my eyes yesterday - there was a difference in power, and I've ordered in new lenses. Should arrive in 2 to 3 weeks (slow delivery due to the pandemic, and restrictions everywhere).

I *think the headaches should ease up once my vision is corrected - according to the optician, my left eye is straining the most. I'm having difficulty reading at a certain distance (also have astigmatism, but that has been reduced according to the latest tests).

I'm keeping myself hydrated and taking lots of short breaks/rest/power naps in the meantime. Can't stare at my own laptop screen or phone screen for too long either. (Which is a pain, because I'm a writer and need my laptop to work).

This is going to sound weird but would it help if the background was darker for your writing? White screens give me migraines so I have dark mode, yellow mode and lilac mode to help me

Yellow mode (or yellow light in general) makes it worse for me. I have reduced the brightness of my screen, but perhaps I should reduce it some more (?) 🤔

NR doesn't come with a black-background-white-text option, does it?

It would be wonderful if there was such an option. I'm on another forum for Art, and they have a sort of grayish-background (ideal) and black-with-white-text (also okay) option(s) available. It doesn't strain the eye much.
