That's a bit too rich for my blood while I am still getting the sps thing figured out lol Maybe once I get things really dialed in lol Ok so cheaper... mipster
It's strange, over the past few days, my Royal Gramma has been extremely shy hiding in her cave and not leaving, even when feeding except for very quick darts to grab a bite. I haven't seen any aggression between the Gramma and the clowns before this and I literally face the tank all day every day so I feel like I would have seen it. I know she's still in there cause her little head pokes out of the cave. I wonder what caused the change because before she was always out and about schooling with the clowns. I hope it's a temporary change because it makes me anxious about her getting enough to eat 😞 1 Quote Link to comment
mipster
Well, what I feared has happened. This morning I woke up to find my darling Royal Gramma dead. I finally discovered why she was hiding out in her cave so much yesterday. She seems to have had developed some sort of swim bladder issue. Yesterday I saw her come out and do all this erratic swimming where she was flipping upside down and couldn't control herself. I had seen this sort of swimming behaviour on my first Royal Gramma the day before she passed too. I remember at the time people telling me it was a common problem with Royal Grammas. I don't think I will try for another one at this point, I will try some other types of hardy fish once the mourning period is over. Maybe now I can get two fish and QT them together. I already was cycling my qt system in preparation for the Pink Streaked Wrasse which I'm starting to believe this guy is lying about it being on the way lol We'll see what the status is once the QT is done cycling. Nitrates are still at the 2 ppm mark even with heavy daily feeding and only 3 hrs lights on on the mini fuge in the back. Absolutely fascinating to me. Off to my local shop, I'm low on red sea AB+ and frozen food. Wonder if I'll get into more trouble... 1 1 Quote Link to comment

I can count the number of acros I have NOT killed on one hand. I shutter to think about how much money I've spent just for them to bleach out either overnight or within 6 months. I'm quite the slow learner, but I've just about given up on the idea of ever keeping SPS long term. Coincidentally, PC Rainbow was my most recent fatality due to an alk swing. 2 Quote Link to comment

James.L
i do have a strange question if anyone can chime in, the sponge filter that originally comes with the set up doesnt leave much room for biomedia like matrix or ceramic rings....do you figure its a good idea to cut the bottom out of the sponge and just fill it with loose media ? or is that a horrible idea, i hear the word "nitrate trap" alot. Quote Link to comment
Tired
You don't need biomedia. Your live rock will house all the bacteria you need. Quote Link to comment
James.L
guess i always thought it was a necessity seeing how almost everyone uses it, perhaps it held more bacteria then live rock and sand? i never really thought about it....monkey see monkey do? lol Quote Link to comment
Tired
Actually, a lot of people don't use it. In fact, there are a number of really nice tanks that have no filter at all, only powerheads for water movement. Bio-media is good in some freshwater tanks, but not needed in saltwater. 1 Quote Link to comment
mipster
I have been away FAR too long. But for any of you Canadians (Ontarians in particular), you'll understand the combo of never ending lockdowns and a bizarrely crazy real estate spring market have kept be very busy. The tank as suffered a bit as a result. Aptasia got a decent foot hold and my battle with aptasia-X as many know sometimes just makes things worse. I also hadn't been doing water changes enough, especially since I wasn't running a skimmer. I decided to get a new toy today and I'm trying out the new model of the IM desktop skimmer. Plugged it in a new minutes ago, no signs of micro bubble, can't hear it and already a nice foam started so it's a good start. Also have water mixing to get a 20 % water change done. Only one loss which all things considered isn't too bad and I'll get it all turned around and thriving again and then you can have some pretty pictures. I've also ordered a Molly Miller Blenny, I've read they like to chow down on aptasia so we'll see if that helps! Things are calmer so I'm back my lovely reef friends! 1 Quote Link to comment
mipster
Gotta say people, for 2 days use, this IM desktop is impressive for a nano skimmer... Check that nasty tea out! 1 Quote Link to comment
LazyFish
Looks like Its extruding its "guts" probly stressed or agrevated. Could have came in contact with something. Sometimes responce to chemical coral warfare. Did it stop? Quote Link to comment

mipster
Photos for fun! I finally got a new phone with a MUCH better camera. These were all taken with my Samsung S20FE with no filters or special settings or general skills with a camera lol 2 Quote Link to comment
mipster
I need some coral for this side back vertical section, I'm not too sure what would look nice in there. Who's got some ideas for me?? Quote Link to comment
LazyFish
Maby a frogspawm or a branching hammer or a big head of trumpet corals glued to the side of the rock. Quote Link to comment

Was thinking a nice branching SPS would look good there Me and SPS have not been great friends so I think I'm sticking with softies and LPS for now. I feel like if I gave my tank side eye, the sps would suddenly start dying. And I know that is largely due to having too long a wait between WC with not enough filtration. Maybe once I get better in control I'll try again but I like my forgiving LPS and softies right now lol 1 Quote Link to comment
Ratvan
Hmmmm only things that spring to mind would be a Leptoseris, but i think you have some already I like the look of chalice corals too when mounted vertically Quote Link to comment
mipster
Would a goni grow vertically up a rock wall? 1 Quote Link to comment
Tired
Pretty much any coral will grow up a vertical wall, if put at the bottom. The exceptions are things that branch completely away from the wall and don't really encrust at all. I'd expect a goni to grow upward, since they're sort of a mounding coral. 1 Quote Link to comment
mipster
Hey all. It's been a rough road the past bit. Something killed Audrey and I have no idea what happened. She was great one day and going the next and gone a week later. My other larger Acantho is doing great, my nitrates and phos, alk etc are all within good levels. I'm also battling a bad aptasia infestation which Aptasia - X isn't winning against - it's probably just making it worse the little suckers lol . I've ordered a small army of Berghia Nudis and I'm going to try tropic Marin's aptasia product to see if the combo together can beat them. The Molly Miller Blenny I got never showed any interest in them - typical 🤣. I suppose I can't complain too much, things have been in cruise control for me for a while now lol It was about time I had a challenge, right? BUT! I feel good, I have a plan and I'm going to push through and get my tank looking good and healthy - it's just going to take time, like anything else in this hobby when done right. 2 Quote Link to comment
gena
If you're still looking for something to grow on that vertical rock, maybe branching GSP? I'm not exactly sure how it would branch in a vertical position, but I'm assuming it would grow out away from the rock and toward the light and maybe give you an interesting look. Plus you are sticking with a softy that will have lots of movement and the encrusting mat will provide less surface area for aptasia to grow ;). Quote Link to comment
