Chadicus Meridius
Could it possibly be because I am only feeding flakes? Quote Link to comment
Chadicus Meridius
Wait...he might of been scared because he is eating now. Anyways and recommendations in foods would be much appreciated? Quote Link to comment
jservedio
Mysis and sinking pellets that are appropriately sized for him (probably 1 - 1.5mm). If he's really small, you may have to chop the mysis a bit. "Blender Mush" type food like Larry's or Rod's are great too if you can find them locally, but can be expensive. Do you eat a decent amount of seafood at home? You can also supplement their food with whatever you are eating whether it's fresh or salt water. Shrimp, cod, tilapia, seabass, swordfish, mahi mahi, catfish, trout, etc. all make awesome fish food. If it's fit for you to eat, just slice a little bit off before cooking it and chop it up fine enough for your fish. My fish get pellets twice a day and I replace that with mysis maybe once or twice a week. If we have sea food and I remember, I cut a little up for them. I will go long stretches (like sometimes a year) where I feed nothing but pellets. 1 Quote Link to comment

We don’t eat a lot of sea food, but we do have frozen shrimp like jumbo shrimp so if I were to cut a little piece of it off let it though out would the damsel eat it because I really don’t want to keep feeding him flakes for a while. Would they eat freeze dried bloodworms? I think I want to get pellets next and then mysis to spruce up what he eats. Quote Link to comment

Frozen jumbo shrimp works as a great supplemental food. Same thing with bloodworms - they aren't a staple food and feeding too much can lead to issues, but can be a good treat once a week. For the size of your fish, you probably only need 1/3 to 1/4 of a cube of mysis, so just use a razorblade and cut the frozen cube into pieces. Some people drain and rinse them, but I don't bother - I just thaw a cube in about 1/4 cup of tank water and feed with a turkey baster. I feed this once or twice a week. If any fish is having issues, I'll feed it 3-4 times a week. Blender mush is my favorite, when I can find it. Basically it's all kinds of fish, shellfish, oyster eggs, pods, garlic, vitamins, etc. all blended up and frozen into a sheet. You break off what you need and thaw and feed just like frozen cubes. It's much more expensive and harder to find locally, but is about as varied as you can get. If you can get some, I highly recommend that instead of mysis or any other frozen food if you can find it. Good quality flakes or pellets are a staple food and they are designed so your fish will thrive by eating nothing else at all - this is what your fish should be eating for the most part. I prefer sinking pellets because the flakes just get sucked down into the sump. Anything my fish don't eat gets eaten by corals or crabs. My clowns and wrasse lived on pellets with nothing else for years at a time - it's totally fine to feed nothing else and it's not going to shorten their lifespan. My clowns are 10 and my wrasse is pushing 10 and they don't eat nearly as well as most other fish on here. 1 Quote Link to comment

I’ve read that damsels are omnivores so do I need to feed them something like Nori or can they just thrive on mysis, flakes, pellet? thanks in advance Quote Link to comment

I’ve read that damsels are herbivores so do I need to feed them something like Nori or can they just thrive on mysis, flakes, pellet? thanks in advance They are omnivores, but they may eat seaweed on occasion if you offered it (a lot just ignore it), but they don't need it. They would be perfectly fine on nothing but good quality flakes or pellets. If you get blender mush, they almost always contain some seaweed and since it's covered in meaty goodness, they will eat it right up. 1 Quote Link to comment

Tired
Flakes and pellets should include both meat and plant matter, which covers an omnivorous diet. 1 Quote Link to comment
