Pretty sure the first one is a gorilla grab

That’s our guess as well. Definitely has the black claws, and hairy legs that a predominant features. We saw him grab a hermit crab and try to get in to the shell for at least an hour until finally giving up on it a couple of weeks ago. They are fascinating creatures to watch.

Here’s a couple shots of our seldom seen largest grab. He hides under the large rock, closest to the back wall. Any one have any ideas what kind of crab he is?

^ gorilla crab?

It could be - I’m not crab expert (that’d be the tank keeper when she’s telling me I’m crabby). But I thought gorilla crabs had black claws, and this one has white claws (not the shitty alcoholic seltzer).

Well guys, I really did it tonight... Unbeknownst to me, the tank keeper was cranky, and was less than thrilled upon discovering that I brought home two (note - I didn’t say pair... More on that later.) hi-fin gobies for her SPS dominant/Christmas tree worm tank.

As she came out of the bedroom, and walked past our 80 gallon mixed reef, Mercury, she noticed that a rock flower was spawning... Or as I like to refer to it as, busting a nut. Apparently the rock flower thought it was mint and condom time(see entry photo for those of you not following along from the beginning.)

The Labouti wrasse decided that rock flower gamete was at first sweet, and then sour... (Sort of like the inverse of sour patch kids. Kids Patch Sour?) He proceeded to jump the wall, in to the back chamber. I was both stunned and impressed by how effortlessly he made it look... Thanks to this wrassehole I had to explain to an all ready grumpy tank keeper that we needed to stop everything and try to catch this fish before he got sucked in the the return pump (side note : part of TK’s grumpiness is that our return pump, a Sicce Syncra SDC 7.0 has been intermittently turning off. Anyone experience this and/or know a resolution?) After about half an hour, a few curse words, and more than one dirty look from the tank keeper, I was able to net this little bastard and get him back in the tank.

Back to the gobies...  While we were dealing with the wrasse, in Mercury, the gobies decided they were breaking up. The larger of the two, would not leave the smaller one alone. Picking at, chasing and truly being a bully throughout every inch of the bag they were being floated in. When I bought them this evening, they were in the same tank, hanging out under a rock together. They looked like a happy couple to me (in my best Maury Povich impersonation, “apparently, that was a lie.”) We decided to separate them, and will unfortunately return one to the LFS tomorrow.

Anyway, it’s been quite the evening. Here’s  the 20 seconds of enjoyment I had this tonight, before all hell broke loose. Apparently he’ll be the only thing in the house tonight “releasing gametes”.

That does sound like a busy night. Glad there weren't any losses and you got it all sorted out.

Thank you Deb. This is a great reminder - as frustrated as we both were last night, that things could always be worse. No losses, and I get a bonus trip to the LFS this week, hopefully this time with adult supervision in the form of the Tank Keeper.

Here’s a quick shot of Mercury, our 80 gallon tank.

I still have a few frag racks I’m working through, to try and clear this tank out, and keep it free of frag racks... Per the original agreement with the tank keeper. If our local group meets again, I’ll be able to offload some of these frags.

All though, thanks to the tank keepers favorite fish, E-fin (the blue hippo tang) making a bed out of one of the frag racks, I may be able to keep one in this tank. (Thanks for looking out, E-fin!) Here he is hanging out with the aforementioned wrassehole from last weeks fiasco.  He’s The Big Labouti, that we’ve affectionately named The Dude.A977461F-564C-4D21-B79D-E19351101113.thumb.jpeg.99e6d2cc20286972f8e42c6ce9b10386.jpeg

Sold some live rock, that we had sitting in a bin, that we weren't going to use... So it got added to the coral cash! Now I just need to decide what I want to fill this tank with the tank keeper to let me know what I can put in here. 😂

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? This is our mixed reef, but we probably won't put too many rock flowers or sticks in this tank, since they both all ready have a tank in our house. I'm currently in a euphyllia kick, but definitely open to cool suggestions.

Last night our large gorilla crab in Calcium (the 20g peninsula 365 tank) decided to make an appearance. He was kind enough to let me snap a few photos of him. Let’s just say, he’s got a face only a mother, and the tank keeper could love.

I’m not sure what this means about me... Maybe the ol’ large Gorilla Crab and I have more in common than a hairy back... Maybe it’s the scruff she’s attracted to.

I mean seriously. This guy is hideous looking...

I’ll admit it... In this last photo he looks kind of cute. However, a rock flower is missing from this rock. I’m wondering if this little bastard is the culprit... But how could you be angry with those miniature, sad, crabby eyes?

Also, here’s a picture of an algae that’s thriving in our tank, fresh from the ocean that came in on the live rock. God knows if you guys have made it this far, you deserve something at least aesthetically pleasing to end this update with.

So far we’ve found 3 hairy crabs, two are purple. One has black claws, the other has white claws. There’s also a smaller pink hairy crab. The tank keeper also saw a small crab in a rock last night, but we didn’t get a good look at it. We also have a couple of porcelain crabs, and a Medusa worm.

Ohhh he’s living the life of leisure now. You’re talking about the tank keeper... She caught and kept Chad the Polyclad in a jar and fed him sacrificial snails for months. Last night I turned the corner to the Element Room, where the affectionately named Mercury and Calcium tanks are at, and she was hand feeding this crab. Literally, hand in water. Food in hand. Food being passed to the gorilla crab. I’m not saying the tank keeper doesn’t take great care of me (she does), but I’ve never been hand fed. Perhaps I need MORE hair on my back and legs to get this treatment... If only I was Greek.

I agree, love porcelian crabs

I haven’t been able to get any thing worthy of posting yet. The only time I see them is when they’re fanning the water column, and it’s arms are moving faster than a teenage boy when he hears his mom coming down the hallway.

I’ll try to have the dslr ready so maybe I can get something the next time I see them out. Stay tuned!

Nice!! How big is your reef? I don’t know much about them. Are they colonial creature so they’ll be cool all hanging out together? Or are they more territorial?
