16 Gallon BioCube carbon filter placement?

Just bought a new nano after being off the grid for 5 years( they do not make my Solana anymore!!) 

Anyway...trying to figure out how to insert the overflow piece and attached the carbon filter(Long rectangular one). The instructions make it look simple...but...No.

 

Does the carbon go flush against the intake water supply or rather is it supposed too? Because the opening isn't wide enough? 
 

And, the overflow piece doesn't sit well either. 

 

Just wondering if 5 year away made me forget everything...
