khkurth51
First tank it's been running about 2 weeks with no fish. Tank has live rock on it. I just added Dr Tim's one and only and had the lights of for 48 hours. When I turned on the lights I noticed these white growths. Any idea what they are and what should be done. dling
May be some sort of bacteria . Where did the rocks come from ? The rock in the lower left corner look like a rock that could be found in someone's yard. Not very porous, just smooth. Quote Link to comment
khkurth51
The rock in the corner is from lake Superior. I baked them @400 degrees for 4 hours and then boiled for 2 hours so hopefully not from those Quote Link to comment
dling
You want the rock to have lots of holes in it . very porous. That allows for more bacteria to grow. Just having rocks is better then nothing. The rock with the red circle on it and the one above it look good. What kind of water to you boil them in? If tap water ,you may have boiled stuff in the rock that you dont want in your tank. Minerals. Dry rock for reef tanks is cheep. Also you my want to rethink the crushed coral. sand is better , it will not allow as much uneaten food and other stuff to work its way down to the bottom of the tank as easily as CC will. Sorry that i got off topic. You dont need lighting while cycling either. Just keep them off . Good luck. Quote Link to comment
